BaFin Chairman Mark Branson argues that while AI helps improve the operational efficiency of banks in areas such as sales and advisory services, this technology is also becoming a powerful tool for hackers. New AI applications are capable of automatically detecting and exploiting vulnerabilities in IT systems at a speed far exceeding traditional defense methods.
"For effective cybersecurity, the defender must be faster than the attacker. The development of AI is giving attackers a speed advantage," Branson emphasized.
The head of BaFin also urged the financial industry to pay special attention to security management and patching, avoiding delays in security updates due to complex internal audit processes, which create loopholes for cybercriminals to exploit.
Previously, the German Finance Ministry also warned about advanced AI models such as "Claude Mythos." This tool is capable of automatically scanning for vulnerabilities in operating systems and web browsers, and provides ready-made methods of cyberattacks as a "manual" for hackers.
Besides the risk of cyberattacks, European financial officials have also expressed concerns about the future role of autonomous AI. When these systems are empowered to make investments or sign contracts, how they will react during crises remains difficult to predict.
A joint study by the European Central Bank, Stanford University (USA), and the German Central Bank (Bundesbank) shows that AI algorithms can overreact to small market fluctuations, leading to asset sell-offs or mass withdrawals, thereby increasing the risk of bank run-offs, also known as "bank escapes".
Furthermore, BaFin also warned about the mismatch between stock prices and the real health of the economy . The German economy has not improved much since the beginning of this year, but the DAX stock index remains near record highs. According to Chairman Mark Branson, the market is in a state of excessive optimism and imbalance, increasing the risk of sharp and sudden corrections.
Given the complex developments in the financial market, BaFin stated that it will propose to the competent authorities of the European Union (EU) to review and revise risk assessment indicators, especially for financial products being distributed to individual investors under the guise of being "safe".
