The thematic exhibition “Huynh Phuong Dong’s Journey” is organized by the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and the family of soldier-painter Huynh Phuong Dong, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025), and the 100th anniversary of the birth of soldier-painter Huynh Phuong Dong (April 22, 1925 – April 22, 2025).
50 years, half a century have passed since the day the South was completely liberated, the country was reunited, the marks of the great resistance war are not only engraved in the heroic pages of history, but also live forever in the works of art that move people's hearts. In the midst of the fierce battlefield, soldier - painter Huynh Phuong Dong spent his youth drawing the heroic pages of the nation's history. Using charcoal, brushes, on rough pieces of paper or materials found on the battlefield, he depicted the indomitable spirit, the heroic sacrifice of his comrades through two resistance wars and the peaceful years of building the country. Those sketches became valuable documents, the foundation for him to create massive oil paintings, recreating battles that went down in history such as the Chu Y bridge battle, the Loc Ninh liberation battle...
With over 70 years of hard work and creativity, soldier-painter Huynh Phuong Dong has left behind a treasure trove of valuable artistic heritage with thousands of works, focusing on the themes of people and landscapes, most notably the theme of revolutionary war. This exhibition introduces 151 of his representative works.
“Huynh Phuong Dong Journey” is like a slow-motion film, bringing the soldiers who went through life and death back to the heroic years, reliving unforgettable memories through each resilient stroke, each solid shape – a symbol of the nation’s indomitable spirit. At the same time, the exhibition is also an opportunity for today’s young generation to feel the value of peace, appreciate the silent sacrifices of the previous generation, thereby continuing the nation’s fine traditions.
The exhibition is open from April 11 to May 2, 2025 on the 1st and 2nd floors of Building B, Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi .
