After more than 3 years of experimental planting, green hemp has brought about practical economic efficiency, helping people in Yen Hoa commune (Da Bac) increase their income and escape poverty.
Green hemp grows well, opening up a direction for changing crop structure, bringing practical results in Yen Hoa commune (Da Bac).
Yen Hoa is a mountainous commune of Da Bac district. The commune has a relatively flat terrain, with large, fertile lands. In recent years, the commune has focused on changing the crop structure, including the model of growing medicinal plants and recently growing green hemp. In 2021, green hemp was put into trial cultivation in Lang hamlet. So far, this crop has shown superior economic efficiency compared to other crops.
The family of Mr. Ha Van Luan, Lang hamlet, planted about 5,000 m2 of green hemp. Previously, on this area, the family only planted corn and cassava, but the economic efficiency was not as expected. Since green hemp was introduced for trial planting, Mr. Luan's family has boldly switched to planting this new crop. With suitable soil and good care techniques, the area planted with green hemp has stable productivity and income. Mr. Luan excitedly said: "Previously, my family only planted corn and cassava, but the economic efficiency was not high, the productivity was low. Since switching to planting green hemp, the family's income has increased. Compared to corn and cassava, planting green hemp gives 2-3 times higher income."
Currently, Lang hamlet has 14 households growing green hemp, with a total area of over 10 hectares. According to hamlet chief Nguyen Viet Hung, after more than 3 years of planting, it has been shown that green hemp is easy to care for, has few pests and diseases, is drought tolerant, and prefers hot and humid climates. The first crop of green hemp will be harvested after 75 days. When harvesting, cut close to the base, the plant will grow back, then only need to fertilize and weed. The next crops are harvested after about 47 - 50 days. Green hemp gives 4 main harvests a year, if well cared for, it can give 5 harvests and be harvested continuously for 10 years.
Regarding output, the cooperative in Hoa Binh city currently purchases green hemp from people. With a purchase price of 40,000 VND/kg of dry husk, people can earn 80-100 million VND/year per hectare, about 3 times higher than growing corn and cassava. "My family currently grows 9,000 m2 of green hemp. Thanks to that, the family has improved their income, earning about 50 million VND/year. With the economic efficiency it brings, this is truly a tree that helps people escape poverty," Mr. Hung shared.
Comrade Bui Van Thuong, Vice Chairman of Yen Hoa Commune People's Committee, said: By the end of 2023, the average income per capita in Da Bac district will reach 40.3 million VND/person/year; the poverty rate will be 20.8%. To increase people's income, in recent years, Yen Hoa has made efforts to change the crop structure, including the model of growing green hemp. After more than 3 years of planting, green hemp has shown economic efficiency many times higher than growing corn and cassava. Therefore, in the coming time, the commune will continue to propagate and mobilize people to expand the area of green hemp to replace ineffective crops.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Da Bac district, in addition to Yen Hoa commune, green hemp has been planted in the communes of Tu Ly, Cao Son, Muong Chieng, Dong Chum, Doan Ket, Trung Thanh with an area of over 95 hectares. To develop and expand the area, the District People's Committee has directed specialized agencies to continue directing communes and towns to maintain and develop the harvested area stably and effectively. At the same time, the model is expanded to communes to gradually replace ineffective crops, contributing to the implementation of the Agricultural Restructuring Plan of Da Bac district for the period 2021-2025.
