According to Insider, Liang didn't need a college education because he already owned a materials trading company and was a millionaire. However, he always harbored a dream of attending university.
" It's frustrating to think I can't go to university. I really want to go to university and become an intellectual," said Mr. Liang. To do that, millionaire Liang needs to take China's annual university entrance exam.
Mr. Liang began taking the exam in 1983, when he was 16 years old. He had to stop taking it for about a decade because the exam was only open to those under 25. However, he resumed taking it in 2001 when those restrictions were lifted.
To beat the 13 million other high school students who also took the exam, Liang said he lived a life of asceticism like a monk for several months before the exam and studied 12 hours a day. However, the millionaire still failed, falling 34 points short of the Sichuan province's minimum score required to enter any university.
" Before receiving the results, I had a feeling that I wouldn't get enough points to get into a good university," Mr. Liang said.
After trying and failing for 40 years, Mr. Liang is now unsure whether he should continue taking the exam. " It's hard to say whether I should continue preparing for next year."
