Supply shortages in the world's two leading coffee producing countries, Brazil and Vietnam, continue to be a factor driving up coffee prices.
Consulting firm Hedgepoint forecasts Brazil's 2024-2025 coffee output to reach 63 million bags, down 3 million bags from the previous crop; meanwhile, Vietnam's coffee output is estimated at around 27 million bags, lower than the previous forecast.
Hedgepoint believes that the global coffee market could be in deficit for the fourth consecutive year, due to declining production in Vietnam and Brazil, and believes that coffee prices will continue to be supported by fundamental factors in the coming time.
Previously, the Brazilian government's Crop Supply Agency (CONAB) also lowered its forecast for Brazil's coffee output in 2024 by more than 4 million bags to 54.79 million bags, down 0.51% from 2023 and down nearly 7% from the previous forecast. Of which, Arabica coffee output decreased by 2.52 million bags, while Robusta coffee decreased by more than 1.5 million bags, down to 15.2 million bags, down 6% from the previous year.
The main reason for the decline in production in both countries was unfavorable weather. In Brazil, despite forecasts of rain, there was insufficient rainfall, causing some areas to remain partially dry. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, after several months of rain, coffee yields have improved compared to the drought at the beginning of the year. However, the market is still concerned about excessive rain due to the La Nina phenomenon during the harvest period, which continues to support coffee prices.
In about three months, farmers in the Central Highlands, including Dak Nong, will begin harvesting coffee. Due to fluctuations in coffee prices, businesses and cooperatives are worried about the lack of clean coffee supply. Businesses are concerned that the price difference between regular and clean coffee could make it difficult to purchase and sell. Harvesting unripe coffee could reduce clean coffee output and affect the reputation of Vietnamese coffee in the long term.
