Referees suspected of corruption 'suspended' across Europe

Marca (Spain) reported that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has temporarily suspended referee Munuera Montero from all international tournaments managed by this agency. In early February, Real Madrid filed a complaint with the Spanish Football Federation against referee Alejandro Muniz Ruiz and VAR assistant Javier Villanueva. In the four-page complaint, the Bernabeu team cited many controversial refereeing decisions in the loss to Espanyol, in which they were on the disadvantaged side.

According to Real Madrid, the referee's decisions "exceeded any margin of human error or referee interpretation". The Royal team described the match as "the culmination of a completely discredited refereeing system" and accused Mr. Muniz of "distorting and falsifying the reality of what happened".

For referee Montero, the criticism directed at him is not only due to the recent match of Real Madrid. Spanish media reported that Mr. Montero may have had shady relationships with some teams in La Liga, through the activities of an intermediary company.
