Early this June, reporters came to the PH Seedling Farm in Xuan Tho Commune, Da Lat City to visit and experience 16 varieties of Spanish gerbera flowers imported to Vietnam for the first time. With 300 m2 of greenhouse area located in the 10,000 m2 area here, PH Farm has "Vietnamized" cultivation techniques suitable for the new ecological environment. As a result, after more than 3.5 months of planting and caring, all 16 flower varieties entered the commercial cutting stage to meet export quality. Accordingly, each row of gerbera flowers grows well, the flower branches grow straight on the soil bed raised more than a hand span above the ground; on both sides of the bed are two parallel lines for drip irrigation combined with fertilization to each tree. On the roof, the walls of the greenhouse are designed with nylon film to protect against the sun and rain, adapting to the weather and climate conditions at each time of the Da Lat agricultural region.

Mr. Truong Duc Phu, owner of PH Seedling Farm, said that with a planting density of 5,000 plants/1,000 m2 , all 16 Spanish gerbera seedlings taken care of for 3.5 months and planted directly into the ground all bloomed in 16 colors: orange with green pistil, dark orange with green pistil, red with yellow and green pistil, red with black pistil, red with double green pistil, red with white and green pistil, yellow with black pistil, yellow with green pistil, pink with green pistil, small white with black pistil, orange with green pistil, yellow with green pistil, red with green pistil, small cream with green pistil, pink with medium green pistil and white with medium green pistil. In mid-May, the Farm held a field workshop to evaluate 16 copyrighted gerbera varieties with the participation of more than 40 gardeners from Da Lat and neighboring areas, many members of the Da Lat Flower Association. Through direct surveys, gardeners have initially selected 9 varieties for official production in March 2024. The representative of the partner supplying 16 Spanish copyrighted gerbera varieties stated that the soil potential of Da Lat and its surrounding areas has proven suitable for expanding the cultivation of gerbera in addition to key flower species such as lilies, carnations, chrysanthemums, roses, etc. From this special experience, PH Seed Farm, Xuan Tho Commune, together with Cao Nguyen Seedling Joint Stock Company, Ward 11, Da Lat City, will continue to build and operate a chain of links with gardeners, expand export markets, and increase the value of copyrighted gerbera varieties in the coming time.

Ms. Duong Thi Ha Phuong, Head of Business Development Department, Cao Nguyen Seedlings Joint Stock Company, added that since 2020, the company has connected with a partner to supply 16 Spanish copyrighted gerbera varieties for trial planting in Da Lat. As a result of negotiations, in early 2023, the company officially imported 1,600 Spanish tissue-cultured gerbera seedlings to nurture for more than 2 months on the substrate tray. Next, the seedlings that have developed pairs of leaves from the substrate tray are taken down to the soil bed, cared for with a new technical process for about 3.5 months, then entering the business period. On average, one tree grows into a bush, yielding 7-8 branches.

“Compared with common gerbera varieties, the copyrighted gerbera varieties have more effective disease resistance, double the harvest per bush, double petals, sharp flower color, and long-lasting freshness. If cared for properly, the copyrighted gerbera can be harvested continuously for up to 3 years before replanting…”, Ms. Phuong shared.

Also according to Head of Business Development Department Duong Thi Ha Phuong, currently Cao Nguyen Seedlings Joint Stock Company is tissue-cultured propagation of 9 Spanish copyrighted lisianthus varieties, including 4 varieties: red with double-petaled green pistils, cream with small green pistils, white with small black pistils, yellow with black pistils, expected to supply according to the needs of gardeners in Da Lat and surrounding areas about 20,000 plants in early 2024. Corresponding to a cultivated area of 4 hectares.

Through research on the potential domestic and export markets for Spanish royal gerbera products, in the coming time, Cao Nguyen Seedlings Joint Stock Company will continue to update new royal gerbera varieties for tissue culture, providing them to gardeners in Da Lat and surrounding areas for conversion, increasing the income value on each of their land areas.
