VnExpressVnExpress06/02/2024

Qatar: After drawing in the group stage, Jordan and South Korea will meet again in the Asian Cup semi-finals today, February 6th. Kick-off is at 10 PM.

There are 3 new updates.

For the first time in history, Jordan reached the semi-finals of the Asian Cup. After only advancing from the group stage as the best third-placed team, the West Asian representatives came from behind to beat Iraq in the round of 16 and then defeated Tajikistan in the quarter-finals.

In the semi-finals, Jordan faced South Korea again – an opponent ranked 64 places higher than them in the FIFA rankings. In the group stage, South Korea took an early lead, but Jordan surprisingly took a 2-1 lead at the end of the first half. It took an own goal by Al-Arab in the first minute of added time in the second half for South Korea to secure a 2-2 draw and maintain their unbeaten record after six encounters with Jordan.

In terms of personnel, Jordan welcomes back Hamza Al-Dardour after his suspension in the quarter-finals. On the South Korean side, Kim Min-jae is sidelined due to accumulating yellow cards, while Kim Seung-gyu is not in good physical condition after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in the group stage. Fitness could be a concern for South Korea, after they played 120 minutes in their two knockout matches against Saudi Arabia and Australia.

South Korea is unbeaten in the 2023 Asian Cup so far, but has drawn three matches and won only two. Jordan, on the other hand, has won three, drawn one, and lost one of their five matches. The inspiration for Hussein Ammouta's team comes from French player Mousa Al Tamari, who is considered Jordan's playmaker. South Korea, meanwhile, relies on the brilliance of their attacking trio playing in Europe: Hwang Hee-chan, Lee Kang-in, and Son Heung-min.

Half of Jordan's 10 goals in the 2023 Asian Cup have come in the last five minutes of each half, or during injury time. Meanwhile, five of South Korea's six goals have been scored after the 80th minute. The semi-final therefore promises to be unpredictable until the very last minute.
