China issues 'identity cards' to humanoid robots.

China has begun implementing a digital identification system for domestically produced humanoid robots, as it pushes for the development of its artificial intelligence (AI)-integrated robotics industry.

According to the SCMP on May 25, China has officially launched its "Lifecycle Management Service Platform for Humanoid Robots" - a system for assigning identification codes to AI-controlled bipedal humanoid robots.

The system was developed by the Humanoid Robotics and Humanoid Artificial Intelligence Standardization Commission (HEIS), under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China.

Chinese officials say the identification codes will be used to track robots throughout their entire lifecycle, from production and distribution to use and recycling, in order to increase traceability and control risks as the humanoid robotics industry grows rapidly.

Du Tu Ming, Deputy Director of the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI), said the system applies to the entire humanoid robot supply chain, including manufacturers, sales units, service providers, users, and recycling facilities.

Under the new mechanism, each robot will be assigned a four-part identifier: a two-digit country code for managing cross-border transactions; a four-digit manufacturer code to identify the manufacturing company; a six-digit product code to classify the robot; and a 17-digit serial number for each device.

Currently, more than 100 humanoid robot manufacturers in China have joined the program. Over 28,000 robots of approximately 200 different models have been assigned digital identifiers.

This move comes as China views humanoid robots as a new strategic technological area.

Recently, the government of this country has been continuously promoting the development of technical standards, management mechanisms, and supply chain coordination for the humanoid robotics industry.

According to research published in January by market consulting firm International Data Corporation (IDC, USA), the global market for humanoid robots grew by 508% last year, with approximately 18,000 robots shipped worldwide .

IDC believes that Chinese companies are emerging strongly thanks to their complete industrial supply chains and ability to rapidly expand production.
