Last weekend, China unveiled its first 5-meter-diameter rocket module made of composite materials. This is the largest domestically produced composite component for reusable launch vehicles.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Beijing, the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, the unit that developed the module, said that this product marks a major breakthrough in manufacturing technology and will be used in an important national space project of China.
According to the institute, more than 60% of the modules are made of composite materials, and the lightweight wall panels can withstand an axial load of 1,000 tons. The modules are also equipped with an adaptive adjustment interface.
The research team overcame numerous technical challenges, such as fabricating new large-scale composite structures with high precision and quality, while completing the entire production process from conceptual design to manufacturing and delivery in just 7 months.
China is currently working to develop a fleet of reusable rockets that could significantly reduce launch costs and improve the efficiency and frequency of space missions.
The China Rocket Technology Research Institute is expected to conduct a large-scale recovery test of its reusable rocket prototype in the coming months.
