China accelerates efforts to stimulate consumer demand.
China's Ministry of Commerce announced on April 15th that data showing the government- supported trade-in programs for used consumer goods in 2026 have yielded impressive results. As of April 12th, these programs generated sales worth 502.94 billion yuan (approximately $73.33 billion) and served nearly 69.78 million shoppers nationwide.
In the automotive sector, trade-in programs played a leading role. Since the beginning of the year, the number of used cars traded in for new ones has exceeded 1.67 million, boosting the value of new car sales to over 269.44 billion RMB. For household goods, people traded in over 27 million old appliances for new ones, generating revenue of 111.09 billion RMB. In addition, these programs also recorded the consumption of 41.08 million digital products and smart devices, contributing 122.41 billion RMB to the total sales value of the entire industry.
According to China's Ministry of Commerce, the surge in sales was driven by the announcement by authorities that the program to subsidize the exchange of old consumer goods for new ones will continue into 2026. This is a crucial step in the government's efforts to stimulate demand and boost domestic consumption.
Previously, data from 2025 also demonstrated the attractiveness and effectiveness of this policy. Throughout 2025, the trade-in programs served 366 million purchases, generating a total sales value of 2.61 trillion RMB. With its current momentum, the program is expected to continue to be a major driver supporting stable economic growth in the future.
