Bayern Munich's homepage confirmed that Ito suffered a relapse of his right metatarsal injury in the 3-2 win over St. Pauli in the 27th round of the Bundesliga on March 29. The Japanese star was brought on by coach Vincent Kompany in the 58th minute but was withdrawn in the 89th minute.
This was a big shock for both Bayern and the fans. During this pre-season, Ito suffered an injury and had to miss 6 months of playing. He only returned in mid-February.
Max Eberl, Bayern Munich's sporting director, shared about Ito's situation: "Hiroki's serious injury makes things difficult. He has just gone through a long recovery period and now he will be out for a while longer. The team will have the best support for Hiroki."
Ito joined Bayern Munich in a €23.5 million deal after three seasons with VfB Stuttgart. In the 2023/24 season, Ito played 26 matches and had 2 assists in the Bundesliga. The 25-year-old defender is expected to strengthen the "Gray Tigers".
In addition to Ito, Bayern also suffered two other injuries in defense, Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano. Davies will also be out for the rest of the season, while Upamecano will return in the next few weeks.
“We have lost another defender in an already depleted squad. Now we must be even more united to continue pursuing our goals,” added Director Eberl.
Coach Kompany now only has Kim Min-jae, Raphael Guerreiro, Konrad Laimer, Eric Dier and Sasha Boey for the defensive positions.
On April 8, Bayern will have the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals at home against Inter Milan.
