In front of female audience, Mr. Trump claimed to be the 'father of IVF'

Former US President Donald Trump has declared himself the 'father' of in vitro fertilization, as reproductive rights become a key issue in the US election.
Reuters reported on October 16 that Mr. Trump attended a program to contact female voters organized by Fox News on October 15 in the state of Georgia. When mentioning the issue of fertility, he made a surprising statement about the in vitro fertilization (IVF) method. "I want to talk about IVF. I am the father of IVF, so I want to listen to the questions," he said. When some female voters were concerned about the appearance of restrictions on infertility treatments, Mr. Trump praised the Republican Party's support for these methods, although some conservatives do not support IVF.

“We are really the pro-IVF party and the Democrats are trying to attack us on this issue. We are even more pro-IVF than they are,” Trump said. Senate Republicans have twice blocked Democratic legislation in recent months to protect access to IVF. Some Republicans say the bill is unnecessary because access to IVF is not currently at risk. IVF, a widely used procedure, became a controversial issue ahead of the US presidential election after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled in February that frozen embryos are children and that those who decide to destroy them could be held legally liable. The ruling did not spell out the legal way embryos could be stored, transported and used, prompting many IVF users to consider moving frozen embryos out of state. The ruling sparked a backlash and the Alabama legislature passed a bill protecting IVF, which the governor signed into law in March.

Trump said he would support free access to IVF, though he did not elaborate on what action he would take. “Trump calls himself the father of IVF,” Vice President Kamala Harris wrote on Twitter on October 16. “What is he talking about? The abortion ban he supports has endangered access to the procedure in states across the country. His views could end IVF altogether.” The Trump campaign later clarified that the Republican presidential nominee’s comments were meant as a joke.
