According to Circular 50/2025/TT-BCT of the Ministry of Industry and Trade , from June 1st, all unleaded gasoline circulating in the market must be blended with ethanol to become E10 gasoline before being sold. This means that RON95 gasoline sold on the market from now on will be blended with 10% fuel ethanol according to the new regulations.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade stated that the implementation of E10 is not a sudden decision but is part of a roadmap that Vietnam has developed over many years. As early as 2012, the Prime Minister issued Decision 53/2012/QD-TTg on the roadmap for applying the blending ratio of biofuels with traditional fuels. After introducing E5 gasoline nationwide in 2018, the regulatory agency continued to research, evaluate, and refine the technical conditions and infrastructure for blending and distribution to move towards the implementation of E10.

E10 gasoline officially went on sale nationwide from June 1st.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the switch to E10 fuel stems from several strategic objectives. Firstly, it's a solution to diversify fuel sources, reducing dependence on fossil fuels amidst the unpredictable fluctuations of the global energy market. Secondly, increasing the ethanol content in fuel contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with Vietnam's commitments at COP26 regarding net-zero emissions by 2050.

In particular, the rollout of E10 gasoline is also expected to provide impetus to the domestic biofuel industry, expand markets for agricultural products such as cassava and corn, and promote the development of a circular economy and a green economy.

To meet market demand, the petroleum industry has proactively prepared a supply of fuel ethanol (E100). According to calculations by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the nationwide demand for E100 for blending with E10 is approximately 92,000 - 100,000 m3 per month. In the initial phase, domestic supply is expected to meet about 25,000 m3/month, with the remainder supplemented through imports to ensure there is no shortage.

Currently, domestic ethanol plants such as Tung Lam, Binh Phuoc, and Dung Quat are being mobilized to meet the demand for fuel blending. Major petroleum trading companies and their distribution networks have also basically completed preparations regarding storage facilities, blending, transportation, and distribution to ensure a stable supply from the very first day of implementation.

In response to consumer concerns about the compatibility of E10 gasoline with currently operating vehicles, the Ministry of Industry and Trade stated that most motorcycles and cars can now use this type of fuel.

According to the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (VAMM), Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio, SYM, and most Suzuki models have confirmed compatibility with E10. The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) also stated that most car models currently in circulation in Vietnam can use E10 fuel without requiring technical adjustments.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade affirms that the transition to E10 is not coercive but rather a step in the green energy transition roadmap. Domestic tests and experience from implementation in many countries show that E10 does not commonly affect engines if the fuel meets standards and vehicles are maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
