Dr. Nguyen Thi Nhung, Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, said that according to the Cambridge dictionary, "ship" is a noun referring to large boats, and the verb "ship" is to send or transport objects or people by sea or to transport in large quantities over long distances from one area to another.
They have a clear distinction between the classic postman as “post-man” (post is post office , the person who delivers goods to the post office is called a post man), and the person who transports goods is “deliverer”. Add the suffix er to the verb "deliver"
means the act of delivering parcels, letters, goods to a home or office.
"It is unclear since when in Vietnam people have called delivery people "shippers", while the correct word should be "deliverer" - partly because this word is long and difficult to pronounce, so it is not popular," Dr. Nhung said, emphasizing that the word "shipper" can be created by people to suit the actual situation, but this word is completely meaningless in countries that use British and American English.
Similarly, saying "free ship" is also grammatically incorrect, instead we should say "This restaurant offers free delivery/ free shipping within the city".
The word 'shipper' was invented by Vietnamese people to use with each other, in English it is meaningless.
Sharing the same view, Ms. Dang Thi Phuong Anh, an IELTS test preparation teacher in Hanoi, also added that according to some academic documents, the word "ship" originates from the Latin word "navi" - meaning "boat" or "transport". "Ship" has been used since the 14th century to refer to the act of transporting goods by sea.
In modern contexts, many people use the word "shipper" to refer to a person or organization that carries out the transportation of goods, often via e-commerce platforms, reflecting the growth of the logistics industry in global trade.
The word "shipper" is even used to refer to fans of (romantic) couples in works of fiction.
According to Ms. Phuong Anh, the word "shipper" is not common in IELTS tests because it is mainly related to the field of e-commerce or freight transport. This word only appears a lot in discussions about supply chains, delivery, and the transportation industry, but is rarely seen in academic or formal writing contexts. Because the word shipper itself is not considered standard language but is just slang, a loanword in English, popular in some Southeast Asian countries.
