In 2017, the "Super Kids Talent Show" attracted attention for discovering many young talents in various fields. Among them, Truong Trong Nhan impressed the audience with his skillful performance of traditional Vietnamese opera (cai luong), despite being only 13 years old. He confidently played the role of Bao Cong in the excerpt "Bao Cong in the Brick Kiln," performing alongside veteran artists. From his movements and stances to his dance, stage presence, and even his singing style, including his vocal delivery and singing during the performance, Trong Nhan performed exceptionally well. He also successfully mastered other classic roles in traditional Vietnamese opera such as Nguyen Dia Lo (in the play "The Great Viet Proclamation"), King Tran Thai Tong (in the play "The Storm of Nguyen Phong"), and An Duong Vuong (in the play "Trong Thuy - My Chau").
Recalling events from nine years ago reveals that Trong Nhan has made significant strides in his artistic journey, winning the prestigious First Prize at the recent National Cai Luong Actor Talent Competition. The 22-year-old artist, one of the most popular contestants, delivered a captivating performance in the excerpt "Acting Alone" by author Le Duy Hanh. In his emotionally charged solo performance, Trong Nhan embodied four characters: an artist, a loyal minister, a young king, and a treacherous official. His smooth psychological transformation, immersive acting, and strong, sweet singing voice captivated the audience. Therefore, when Trong Nhan's name was announced as the first of the four First Prize winners, many responded with enthusiastic applause.
Born into a family with no artistic background, Trong Nhan showed talent from a young age. He studied traditional Vietnamese folk music under artist Minh Duc and then tried his luck in the 2017 "Super Kids Talent Show." This led to his discovery by artist Binh Tinh, and at the age of 15, he joined the Huynh Long Traditional Opera Troupe, officially beginning his professional career. Over the past seven years, Trong Nhan has left his mark through a series of impressive traditional opera performances, including winning a Silver Medal at the Hanoi Theater Festival for his role in "Royal Power" and the Young Talent Award at the National Traditional Opera Festival for his role in "Tay Son Female General"...
Trong Nhan possesses all the qualities of a handsome leading man, from his appearance to his singing voice and acting skills. In particular, Trong Nhan is very good at mastering and improvising on stage. His "off-script" improvisations have become his "trademark," bringing laughter to the audience. It's a humorous, charming style of acting, which young fans often call "tẹn tẻ" (a term referring to a playful, endearing quality). He has a huge fan base, especially on social media platforms. Many videos featuring Trong Nhan's performances have reached millions of views, most recently his role as the mandarin in "Tu Trang Dang Khoa" (The Four Scholars' Success).
From Trong Nhan's story, it's clear that Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) is not far removed from young people. When a young artist is both skilled and innovative in their approach to the audience through a relatable, charming performance style and an active presence on digital platforms, Cai Luong has more opportunities to connect with the public. This is also a positive sign for the Cai Luong stage. There is a generation of talented, dynamic young artists who know how to preserve traditional values but are not afraid to innovate.
