US Coast Guard spotted Chinese and Russian ships off Alaska in August 2023
The US Legend-class patrol ship is the USCGC Kimball. and patrol aircraft detected a group of Chinese warships off the coast of Alaska on July 6 and 7, according to a US Coast Guard announcement.
The crew of the USCGC Kimball recorded the presence of three Chinese military vessels about 200 km north of Amchitka Pass in the Aleutian Islands. A US HC-130J patrol aircraft detected a fourth Chinese warship about 135 km north of Amukta Pass.
All four Chinese naval ships were moving in international waters at the time but were still within the US exclusive economic zone.
"The Chinese naval presence at that time was in compliance with international regulations and standards," CBS News quoted Rear Admiral Megan Dean, commander of the 17th Coast Guard.
The US Coast Guard said the Chinese ships responded to radio contact with the force and announced they were on a freedom of navigation mission.
The USCGC Kimball monitored the group as it passed south of the Aleutian Islands into the northern Pacific .
Last August, the US deployed four warships accompanied by a reconnaissance aircraft after a group of 11 Chinese and Russian naval vessels conducted a joint patrol off the coast of Alaska.
