Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Khue (residing in Trieu Hoa commune, Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province) and her son, new student Nguyen Hai Quan, were present at the place to receive the scholarship "Tiep suc den truong" (Supporting students to school) in Quang Tri province very early - Photo: NHAT LINH

That was the feeling of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kim Khue (residing in Trieu Hoa commune, Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province) when she heard that her son had won the Tuoi Tre newspaper's scholarship to support him to school. Waking up at 4am, Mrs. Khue and her son, a new student Nguyen Hai Quan, traveled dozens of kilometers from Trieu Phong district to Dong Ha city to wait to receive this meaningful scholarship.

As a single mother, Mrs. Khue has to work all the jobs to raise her two sons. When she heard that Quan was admitted to the Vietnam-Korea University of Information Technology ( Da Nang City), she couldn't sleep for several days because she was worried about where she would get the money to pay for her son's tuition.

" The Tuoi Tre Newspaper's "Tiep Suc Den Truong" scholarship is like a life buoy for my children and I to cling to in difficult times. I really cannot describe the feeling, I have to urge my children to come here as soon as possible to wait to receive the scholarship," said Mrs. Khue.

Ms. Doan Thi Thuong burst into tears when sharing her feelings that her son will receive a scholarship - Photo: DOAN CUONG

When she learned that her child would receive a scholarship, Doan Thi Thuong (51 years old, Ho Xa town, Vinh Linh, Quang Tri) and her child woke up at 4:30 a.m. She exclaimed: "I'm so happy. I couldn't sleep all night, and at 4:30 a.m. my child and I got up, got ready, and went to catch the bus to receive the scholarship."

Ms. Thuong is a single mother. Both children are very good students. One son is in his third year at Da Nang University of Technology, the second son, Truong Dinh Bao, a freshman, also passed the Da Nang University of Technology. Bao took the military exam to save on tuition but was a little short of the mark and then registered for the University of Technology. The three of them live off of 4 sao of rice fields.

Ms. Tran Thi Phuong, in Cam Lo district, could not hide her joy. Her daughter, Nguyen Thi Cam Tu, a freshman at Phu Xuan University, Hue, called to tell her that she had received a scholarship at the beginning of the week. She felt as if she had received support from her child.

Ms. Phuong said her husband worked as a construction worker but died 9 years ago in an accident while working on a construction project. She raised three children alone. This year, her eldest child just graduated from Hue University of Foreign Languages, and her second daughter, Tu, is in her first year. Despite the indescribable hardship, she always tries to send her children to school.

"Raising a child alone is hard enough, and the four-year journey to university is even more difficult. Luckily, Tuoi Tre newspaper helped me," said Ms. Phuong.

As one of the new students receiving the scholarship "Tiep suc den truong", Le Minh Thu (residing in Trieu Van commune, Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province) stood nervously and excitedly in front of the program hall waiting.

Thu is a freshman at the University of Economics (Hue University). Her father was diagnosed with liver cancer last year after a long battle. Thu's mother has been single-handedly taking care of the family and her daughter while she goes to college.

The day her father passed away, Thu felt like she was collapsing because she had lost the most familiar spiritual support in her life.

"My father wished to see his daughter wear a university graduation gown. However, that could not happen. After my father passed away, I tried my best to fulfill his wish when he was alive, which was to see his daughter pass the university entrance exam, and I did it," Thu shared.

Although she passed the university entrance exam, Thu's path to becoming an economics graduate is not smooth. After many years of treating her father's illness, Thu's family was almost bankrupt.

"When I heard that I had received the Tiep Suc Den Truong scholarship, I was very happy. This scholarship will help me get through the school year ahead. After receiving the scholarship, I will continue to look for a part-time job to have money to pay for my tuition," Thu said.

The scholarship awarding ceremony started at 9am, but by 7am, dozens of new students had arrived at the awarding location. Unable to hide her joy, Nguyen Ha Vi, a new student majoring in Japanese at Hue University of Foreign Languages, said she couldn’t sleep last night because she was so nervous.

Vi woke up at 5am to prepare to go from Hai Lang district to Dong Ha city to receive the scholarship. She said the scholarship was too big and too meaningful to Vi at this time.

The house only has mother and daughter and grandmother. Mother has been raising Vi alone for the past 18 years, which has been an extremely difficult journey. Now that Vi is in college, this burden is even heavier on mother's shoulders at over 60 years old.

"This is such a great joy for me," Vi confided.

That is the message of Mr. Hoang Nam - Vice Chairman of Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee - sent to poor new students who came to receive scholarships.

For a land that has suffered much pain and devastation from war and natural disasters, Quang Tri province always identifies the work of promoting learning, promoting talents, and building a learning society as an important and difficult task that requires the participation of the entire political system and society with appropriate, creative, regular, continuous, and highlighted methods.

In response, Quang Tri students with a tradition of studiousness have always strived to excel, persevered in their studies, and considered education the most sustainable way out of poverty.

"Quang Tri Province acknowledges, respects and highly appreciates the initiative of Tuoi Tre Newspaper, Quang Tri Provincial Youth Union, Quang Tri Affection Club and sponsors who have organized and maintained the "Tiep suc den truong" Scholarship for new students who overcome difficulties and study well, a program with profound humanistic meaning, spreading good values in life," said Mr. Nam.

In his message to the young people who came to receive the scholarship, Mr. Nam said that the fourth industrial revolution, digital technology and artificial intelligence are posing opportunities and challenges for countries and for each person. Quang Tri province is no exception to that trend.

"I hope you will consider today's help as a great motivation to study and be grateful for society's attention to you. So that when you are successful, you can come back to build Quang Tri and help future generations continue to write their own stories today."

Scholarships as gifts warm up cold lives

Two new students Nguyen Duc Quang Anh (Da Nang University of Technology) and Ho Dinh Xuan Hieu (Da Nang University of Medical Technology) - Performed by: QUOC NAM - HOANG TAO - NHA CHAN - MAI HUYEN - TON VU

The whole hall fell silent when the clip about two new students Nguyen Duc Quang Anh (Da Nang University of Technology) and Ho Dinh Xuan Hieu (Da Nang University of Technology and Pharmacy) was shown.

The scholarship is like a gift that warms the cold life of Xuan Hieu and his grandmother.

Freshman Ho Dinh Xuan Hieu used to have a mother and an older brother, but when he was only 8 months old, Hieu's mother fell ill and passed away. His older brother was the result of a relationship between Hieu's mother and her previous husband. Unfortunately, her current husband also passed away early.

Hieu was the result of a love affair between his mother and a person whose identity he still does not know. When his mother died, his older brother was sent to his paternal home to be raised. Hieu lived with his maternal grandmother.

Mrs. Hoang Thi Tuong, Hieu's grandmother, has a hunched back because of her children. She has to be both mother and grandmother, taking care of Hieu since he was a baby.

Hieu grew up lonely like a weed, but he did not give up. The misfortunes of his circumstances seemed to make Hieu stronger. In 12th grade, Hieu was even an excellent student.

Hieu's grandmother is now 75 years old and has severe thrombocytopenia. Every month, she has to stay at Hue Central Hospital for at least a week to replenish platelets.

The day Hieu passed the entrance exam to the Faculty of Pharmacy, Danang University of Technology and Pharmacy was the happiest day for her. It was like a sweet fruit for the person who planted the tree, taking care of it from the moment it first sprouted.

But she was in her twilight years. She was exhausted. She didn't know how long she could be with her grandson. She didn't know how she could help him get through the next five years of college. This scholarship was like a great gift for both of them.

The Game-Addicted Boy Dropped Out of School for 6 Years: I Returned to Studying to Change Myself

The story that many people admire and respect of Nguyen Duc Quang Anh

As for Nguyen Duc Quang Anh, his journey is a long one. Listening to this young man tell his life story, many people dare not imagine. After 8th grade, Anh dropped out of school for 6 years, partly because his grandmother was poor, his parents died early and there was no one to guide him, and Anh was addicted to playing games.

It was even more unbelievable when, at the age of 19, Anh asked to go back to grade 8, was the student with the highest graduation score of the Continuing Education Center, and passed the university entrance exam for AI.

Anh thanked society for caring about him. He affirmed that he would return to his studies to change himself and help his grandmother more.

Following the exchange story, Ha Vi, a new student receiving a scholarship, said that the spirit of these new students also gave her more motivation on the upcoming journey. "I have difficulties, but many students have more difficulties. And they have overcome difficulties to go to school," Vi said.

New students are the motivation for us to go on the 21-year journey of support.

Mr. Dong Hoang Hien, head of the Quang Tri Love Club and director of Binh Dien - Quang Tri Joint Stock Company, said that this year is the 21st year that the Quang Tri Love Club has been associated with the Tuoi Tre Newspaper's School Support program.

"We have seen your extraordinary determination and strong will to overcome adversity. That is the motivation for us to continue to act, trying not to let you stop at the threshold of university because of difficult circumstances.

These scholarships are not only material, but also meaningful, hoping that you will always nurture your dreams, persistently pursue and realize those noble ambitions. I believe that you will do great things in the future," said Mr. Dong Quang Hien.

Former exchange student Tran Huy Hoang, Information Technology major, Danang University of Technology.

The exchange program also had the participation of Tran Huy Hoang, a former student of Information Technology, Danang University of Technology.

Hoang is the owner of a business specializing in web design services. When he received his admission notice in 2017, Hoang's father was diagnosed with cancer and had to be admitted to Hue Central Hospital for long-term treatment.

"All the resources in the house had to be spent on saving my father, which made me confused. I didn't know what to do. I didn't have money to go to school," Hoang recalled.

Having dropped out of school two years before and then returned to school, Hoang knew he couldn’t drop out again. But finding money to go to school was a headache for Hoang.

And the Tuoi Tre Newspaper's "Tiep suc den truong" scholarship discovered Hoang's heart. With a 10 million VND scholarship at that time, Hoang packed his bags and went to school. After that, Hoang applied for part-time jobs continuously in Da Nang to have money to study for four years.

"In the most difficult times, the "Tet suc den truong" scholarship helped me. Now I still carry gratitude in my heart." Hoang said his biggest wish is that in the future he will follow in the footsteps of his uncles and aunts, and return to help the next generations.

Mother's suffering eases with her son's 15 million VND scholarship gift

Ms. Tran Thi Phuong (residing in Cam Lo town, Cam Lo district, Quang Tri province) burst into tears when watching the clip of two characters interacting at the program "Tet suc den truong" in Quang Tri province because she saw her situation in it - Photo: NHAT LINH

Sitting in a corner of the stage at the "Tiep suc den truong" scholarship award ceremony, Ms. Tran Thi Phuong (residing in Cam Lo town, Cam Lo district, Quang Tri province) occasionally raised her hand to her cheek to quickly wipe away two lines of tears.

After the program showed a clip about the difficult journey of two new students, Nguyen Duc Quang Anh and Nguyen Thi Tinh Thuong, Ms. Phuong could not hold back her emotions.

"I see my family's situation in it. My three children are also orphans, and the mother and children have to rely on each other like the two young people in the clip," said Ms. Phuong.

A few years ago, Ms. Phuong's husband had a work accident and passed away. Losing her husband, father and breadwinner, Ms. Phuong and her children were left struggling in life.

To raise her three children, Ms. Phuong did all kinds of manual labor jobs. Eight small fields were not enough to support her children's education, so whenever the neighbors asked her to help, Ms. Phuong would do it, regardless of the weather.

Loving her mother, Nguyen Thi Cam Tu (Mrs. Phuong's daughter) tried hard to study well and passed the entrance exam to the Chinese language major of Phu Xuan University (Thua Thien Hue).

The day the admission notice arrived, Mrs. Phuong cried when she saw Tu's tuition fee of 15 million VND. For her family, that amount of money was a huge fortune.

After running around the neighborhood, Mrs. Phuong was able to borrow enough money for her child to enroll in school on time. But how to repay the kindness to the neighbors, Mrs. Phuong said she really didn't know what to do.

"Luckily, my daughter told me that she received the scholarship to help me go to school , which was exactly the amount of money I borrowed from the neighbors for my daughter to go to school. I honestly don't know how to thank the program's sponsors enough," said Ms. Phuong.

Mr. Truong Quang Huong - Vice President of Quang Tri Charity Club attended the scholarship awarding ceremony on September 28 - Photo: HOANG TAO

21 years with Tuoi Tre newspaper helping students in Quang Tri: My name is Huong, always looking back to my hometown!

For the past 21 years, Mr. Truong Quang Huong, General Director of Quang Nong Company, Vice Chairman of Quang Tri Affection Club, has always taken time to return to the sunny and windy land to join Tuoi Tre newspaper in awarding scholarships for the "Tiep suc den truong" program.

As a son born in the land with a tradition of studiousness, Mai Xa (Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province), Mr. Huong has tasted the bitterness and sweetness of the harsh climate and war in the land of the 17th parallel. Mr. Huong understands the studiousness of the children in his hometown of Quang Tri.

Leaving his hometown to go to the South to make a living, the longing for his homeland always urged Mr. Huong to return.

"My parents named me Huong because they wanted me to remember my roots and always look back to my homeland no matter where I went or what I did. That's why I always felt compelled to do something, especially for poor, studious children like me."

21 years ago, when Mr. Le Quoc Phong - former general director of Binh Dien Fertilizer Company - and Tuoi Tre newspaper asked him to join Tiep suc den truong without much thought.

"I am most impressed with Hang Mam Ruoc. From a young person at risk of dropping out of school, she became a master's student and an international student in Australia. Then she returned to develop the fish sauce brand in her hometown further. That is a mirror reflecting the spirit of the Tiep Suc Den Truong scholarship," said Mr. Huong.

Mr. Huong emphasized that young people should not give up easily, should not surrender to fate because of difficulties, "new students facing difficulties, please call Tuoi Tre ".

"Be confident to go and come back, support juniors in the same situation as you today, so that this scholarship will continue forever in the future," said Mr. Huong.
