Xavi applied to be the coach of the Indian national team. |
According to The Times India , Xavi Hernandez is among the candidates who have applied to become the head coach of the Indian national team. Mr. Subrata Paul, head of the Indian Football Federation, confirmed this: "It is true that Xavi's name is on the list. His application has been sent to us."
However, the Technical Committee of the Indian Football Federation removed Xavi's application from the preliminary round, citing that the former Barcelona coach's salary demands were too high compared to the federation's budget. Xavi demanded an expected salary of up to 8 million euros per year, far beyond the financial capacity of the Indian team.
Instead, the All India Football Federation is focusing on more affordable candidates who fit the team’s long-term goals. The Indian national team is on the lookout for a new coach after Manolo Marquez resigned in June following the team’s disappointing exit from the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
Since leaving Barcelona, Xavi has yet to accept any coaching job. Although he was mentioned in the candidate list of many famous clubs such as AC Milan, Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen or Manchester United, in the end, they all chose other directions. For Xavi, the coaching bench in Europe is now gradually becoming a "narrow land".
Qatar - the place that launched Xavi's coaching career - could be an option to return. In addition, Saudi Arabia is also actively hunting for European strategists with huge salaries, and Xavi is certainly a name on the list.
