The Road of Hope in A Mu Sung

A Mú Sung is a particularly disadvantaged mountainous border commune in Lào Cai province, with a border nearly 26.8 km long. For many years, floods and landslides have frequently damaged the roads, making travel difficult for the local people. Thanks to the attention of the Party and the State, the 14 km section of border road from Lũng Pô village to Phù Lao Chải village (bordering Y Tý commune) is now being widened and concreted, contributing to changing the lives of people in this border region.

The joy of having a new bridge.

Phu Lao Chai is one of the five border villages of A Mu Sung commune, with over 100 households, mainly Dao and Mong ethnic minorities. Within the village, a large stream flows through two residential areas, Phu Lao Chai and Pac Ta, before emptying into the Lung Po stream.

In previous years, every time the rainy season arrived, floodwaters from upstream would pour down, submerging the Phù Lao Chải and Pạc Tà culverts, making it very difficult for vehicles to pass through.

The village of Phù Lao Chải has received investment for the construction of two culverts across the stream.

Mr. Tan Lao Lo, a resident of Phu Lao Chai village, recalled: During the rainy season of 2024 and 2025, the temporary bridge over the stream was swept away by the flood, cutting off the road. Even after the flood subsided, people still faced great difficulty crossing the damaged ford. Nearly 20 students from the Pac Ta residential area had to wade through the stream to get to school every day, facing numerous risks.

However, that was two years ago. Before this year's rainy season, the people of Phu Lao Chai village were very excited because both bridges across the stream were basically completed, making it easier for people to travel, and allowing students to go to school with peace of mind, eliminating the worry of isolation during the rainy season.

The Pac Ta culvert has been completed and put into use, making travel more convenient and safer for the local people.

According to information from the Economic Department of A Mu Sung commune, from March 2025, A Mu Sung commune was approved by the People's Committee of Bat Xat district (formerly) for two projects: the Pac Ta and Phu Lao Chai underground spillways, with an investment cost of 5 billion VND. After adjustments and additions, each project has an investment cost of 6.366 billion VND, with the main item being the construction of a reinforced concrete bridge over the Phu Lao Chai stream.

After more than a year of construction, the two projects have now basically completed all the items and are ready to be handed over and put into use.

In reality, the Phù Lao Chải bridge, located on Provincial Road 156, is a vital route connecting the center of A Mú Sung commune to Y Tý commune; while the Pạc Tà bridge, situated on the border road connecting to the former A Lù commune (now Y Tý commune), plays an extremely important role. Upon completion, these two projects will not only solve livelihood problems for the local population but also create a foundation for the development of the entire region.

A prosperous border route

In 2026, along with the joy of the new bridge, the people of the border villages in A Mu Sung commune are also very excited that the border road from Lung Po Border Guard Station (in Lung Po village) to Phu Lao Chai village will be basically completed with the widening and concrete paving, replacing the previous bumpy dirt and rocky road.

The road through Phu Lao Chai village has been paved with concrete, opening up opportunities for development and improving the lives of people in this border region.

Mr. Sung A Sanh, Secretary of the Phu Lao Chai village Party branch, said: Phu Lao Chai village is located next to Lung Po stream, close to the border with China, with 6 km of border line running through the village's territory. This is a vital road connecting the entire production area of the people near Lung Po stream.

Previously, the road was small, mostly unpaved, and very muddy during the rainy season, making travel very difficult for the local people. With the completion of the road, the transportation of food and goods will be easier, opening up more opportunities for economic development for the local people – where more than 60% of households are still poor or near-poor.

Besides serving the needs of the people, the road also holds special significance for national defense and security.

The new road is of significant importance in ensuring national security and defense, as well as socio-economic development in the border region.

Captain Pham Tam Long, Deputy Commander of A Mu Sung Border Guard Station, said that previously, the unpaved road was frequently damaged by landslides, causing many obstacles to border patrol and control. Now, the road has been widened and paved with concrete, allowing functional forces to move faster and promptly handle emerging situations, contributing to maintaining border security.

Speaking with reporters, Mr. Tran Quoc Dinh, Secretary of the Party Committee of A Mu Sung commune, affirmed that the border road through Lung Po and Phu Lao Chai hamlets in A Mu Sung commune, connecting to Y Ty, is a project of significant importance.

Upon completion and commissioning, the project will not only contribute to ensuring national defense and security in the border region, but also create a major impetus for the development of production, transportation of goods, and trade connections along the border between the A Mú Sung area and Y Tý and other localities in China via the Thiên Sinh bridge.

The route also opens up a unique border tourism route, allowing tourists to travel from Lung Po Flagpole, A Mu Sung commune to Thien Sinh Bridge, Y Ty commune in the fastest way, with unique and attractive experiences.

Once completed and put into use, the road will make it more convenient for locals and tourists to travel from Lung Po Flagpole in A Mu Sung commune to Thien Sinh Bridge in Y Ty commune.

The Party Committee, local government, and people of A Mú Sung commune hope that the investor and construction unit will soon resolve obstacles in land clearance, accelerate progress, and ensure the quality of the project so that the road can be completed soon, creating momentum for development and bringing a more prosperous and happy life to the people in the border area.
