However, according to the representative of theeducation sector, exam scores are only part of the overall picture, and need to be fully evaluated in the real context to have solutions to improve long-term quality.
Don't complain, blame
In the list of 53 public high schools in Dak Lak province, Hai Ba Trung High School, Buon Ho ward has the lowest admission score with 2.5 points for 3 subjects: Math - Literature - Foreign Language. However, according to Mr. Nguyen Tu Cuong - Principal of the school, this is not a surprise.
“For many years, when the school still considered transcripts for admission, the school’s entrance scores were always low. Good and excellent students often chose to enter central schools in the town. This year, the entrance exams resumed, and this situation repeated itself.
However, it is necessary to evaluate objectively, because if the standard score is 6.25, there are 248 students who scored 6.25 points or higher, and only 16 students are short of the target assigned by the Department of Education and Training. When the standard score is reduced to 2.5 points, the official standard score, the school can only recruit 13 more students and still lack 3 targets. Thus, the score range is not as low as many people think," said Mr. Cuong.
According to Mr. Cuong, the school determined not to complain about difficulties or blame. Instead, the teaching staff proactively reviewed the circumstances of each student, divided them into groups to develop appropriate teaching plans. The Party cell, the Board of Directors and professional groups worked together, both encouraging and supervising. Free review classes were organized in accordance with Circular 29/2024 of the Ministry of Education and Training ; disadvantaged students were mobilized to support them with books and learning materials.
In the remote commune of Hoa Son, Hung Vuong Secondary School, despite its poor conditions, with a scientific approach, the 10th grade passing rate for the 2025-2026 school year reached 91.48% (43/47 students), of which 15 students scored above 15 points. Student H'Nery Hlong scored 17.25 points.
Principal Tran Ngoc Thinh shared: “We do not expect support from outside, but organize review sessions close to the exam structure and sample exams, divide students into ability groups, and coordinate with parents to support home learning. We conduct two mock exams, grade the papers with specific comments, and send them to families. Homeroom teachers and subjects are clearly assigned.”
Stories from the grassroots show that with initiative from schools, teachers and support from parents, quality can still be improved.

Not just looking at the results
Leaders of the Dak Lak province Department of Education and Training emphasized: We should not use the benchmark score of an exam to evaluate the overall quality of education.
First of all, the generation of 9th grade students in the 2024-2025 school year has been strongly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, prolonged online learning, and inadequate organizational conditions, while having to approach the 2018 General Education Program with the orientation of developing learners' qualities and abilities. Knowledge gaps are inevitable and cannot be filled in a short time.
In addition, for many years the province has not organized entrance exams for grade 10. The return to the exam format this year has left both students and their parents bewildered and lacking initiative. Test-taking skills, exam psychology, and review methods all have to be redone from scratch.
The abolition of the district level from July 1st has led to changes in the educational organization. The junior high school teaching staff, previously managed by the district, is now under the province's responsibility, causing some schools to have unstable personnel or not being assigned to the right major. In addition, Dak Lak is a multi-ethnic province, with hundreds of schools in particularly difficult areas. Lack of facilities, teaching equipment, and local teacher shortages still exist in many subjects. Maintaining the number of 9th grade students is a great effort, not to mention reviewing for the 10th grade entrance exam.
In fact, in the mock exam for grade 10 admission at the end of May 2025, the Department of Education and Training also warned about this reality. Mr. Nguyen Huy Dung - Head of the Department of Education and Training of Ea H'Leo district (former) affirmed that the mock exam results were worrying when the number of students scoring below 5 accounted for 70 - 81%.
Specifically, out of nearly 2,000 9th grade students taking this mock exam, the number of students who scored below average (5 points) was: 77% in English; 70% in Literature; and 81% in Math.
From there, Mr. Dung affirmed that with less than 1 month left to enter the official exam, it will be very difficult for students to fill the gap in knowledge and test-taking skills.
Look straight, do it
Dr. Do Tuong Hiep - Deputy Director of Dak Lak Department of Education and Training said: Low benchmark scores cannot be a reason to deny teachers' efforts, nor an excuse to avoid. The important thing is to identify the right cause and take appropriate, long-term actions.
For the provincial education and training sector, the solution does not lie in “mechanically bringing in good teachers”, but in fostering the capacity of the local team. Professional clusters are organized by region so that good local teachers will proactively support and share their expertise with disadvantaged schools. Online teaching, career counseling, and remote review guidance continue to be widely applied.
At the same time, the province is strengthening support policies for teachers in remote areas, from allowances, public housing, to preferential policies in upgrading exams, considering emulation titles... Teachers who overcome difficulties for the sake of students will be properly recognized.
Another important direction is to link responsibilities between schools - teachers - parents, especially in difficult areas. Only when parents are together, students will have a stable learning environment. Therefore, the provincial Department of Education and Training always encourages schools to increase communication, transparency of learning results and exam preparation progress for parents.
According to Mr. Hiep, the quality of education cannot be measured by a single test score, but by the entire journey of innovation, training, support, maintaining student numbers, ensuring fairness and nurturing the dream of learning for all students - regardless of region.
The entrance exam for grade 10 of public high schools in Dak Lak for the 2025-2026 school year has 53 schools, of which 3 specialized schools enroll 770 students (full enrollment). The remaining 50 high schools have 19,393 students admitted (the target is 20,026). Of which, the highest standard score for the first wish is Le Quy Don High School (Buon Ma Thuot ward) with 19.5 points and the lowest is Hai Ba Trung High School (Buon Ho ward) with 2.5 points.
