In recent days, people in Ca Mau City (Ca Mau Province) have been busy harvesting watermelons to serve the market for the Lunar New Year 2024.
In Ly Van Lam commune, there are more than 150 households growing watermelons on an area of about 94 hectares. This commune is also considered the watermelon capital of Ca Mau province.

According to local people, in the past, when harvesting watermelons, they often put them in sacks or used wheelbarrows to transport them. They said that using this method of transporting them took a lot of time and effort, and notably, this method made the watermelons easily bruised and broken due to having to move on uneven dirt roads.

Recently, many households here have come up with a great idea of using hammocks to carry watermelons from the fields to the gathering place faster and more effectively. They tie the two ends of the hammock to a 2m long wooden pole and then put the watermelons in the hammock to carry them.
Mr. Nam (a melon grower) said that using a hammock can carry 8-9 large melons weighing about 6-10kg each trip, while using a sack or wheelbarrow can only carry 3-4 melons.
"This new method helps us speed up the process and saves us the effort of transporting watermelons from the field to the yard," he shared.

According to the leader of the Farmers' Association of Ly Van Lam commune, although the price of watermelons during Tet 2024 is lower than previous years, people still basically make a profit. Watermelon for Tet is sold on the market for 300,000-400,000 VND/pair, depending on weight.
This year, some households planted more than 4,000 watermelon vines since the 10th lunar month. After harvesting and deducting all expenses, they earned a profit of about 50 million VND.
