The dollar rose against the Swiss franc and the euro, but weakened against the Japanese yen on Wednesday, as positive sentiment from a new U.S. trade deal was outweighed by political uncertainty surrounding the future of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a trade deal with Japan that would cut tariffs on auto imports from the country to 15 percent in exchange for $550 billion in investment in the United States. It is the most significant of several deals Trump has signed since imposing sweeping global tariffs in April.
The dollar rose against the Swiss franc, on track to end a three-session losing streak. The greenback was last up 0.24% at 0.79425 franc.
The greenback weakened against the yen, hitting its lowest level since July 11 after reports that Ishiba plans to step down next month after a heavy defeat in the upper house election. Ishiba has denied reports of his decision to step down. The yen was last down 0.06% at 146.565 yen per dollar.
“The main driver of USD/JPY is political concerns, as it appears the Japanese prime minister is under pressure to consider resigning,” said Juan Perez, senior director of trading at Monex USA in Washington. “The deal is good for automakers for now, but the market is also worried that tariffs could be raised again at any time, as they are not going away and will continue to be used as a bargaining tool. Japan, a developed economy , has agreed to new trade terms, raising concerns that the successful use of tariffs will create incentives to continue using them as a threat.”
The European Union and the United States are working toward a new trade deal that would impose a common 15% tariff on EU goods imported into the United States, two diplomats told Reuters, a deal that would mirror a similar deal the United States just reached with Japan.
The euro pared earlier losses and rose 0.08% against the dollar to $1.176250.
The dollar has been one of the weakest major currencies since Trump announced sweeping tariffs on trading partners on April 2. The weakness continued as the tariffs were put on hold while negotiations continued, but the dollar has stabilized this month.
The August 1 deadline to finalize the tariff deal is still looming and investors remain cautious as they wait to see how things will play out.
