The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), stopped at 103.69 - up 0.24 points compared to March 13, 2025.

The dollar rose against major currencies including the Swiss franc and the euro on Thursday but remained under pressure due to concerns about slowing economic growth and global trade disputes.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 200% tariffs on wine, cognac and other imported spirits from Europe, opening a new front in a global trade war that has roiled financial markets and raised fears of a recession.

On Wednesday, Trump also threatened to retaliate after the EU announced that the bloc would impose retaliatory tariffs on $28 billion in imports from the United States starting next month.

Labor Department data on Thursday showed U.S. producer prices were unexpectedly flat in February, but the prospect of tariffs is unlikely to keep prices low in the coming months.

"The dollar has weakened very strongly in the last days and weeks and it looks like we are entering a consolidation phase," said Vassili Serebriakov, foreign exchange strategist at UBS in New York. " We see the possibility of a dollar recovery as we are still being affected by the tariff news and the upcoming April tariff deadline."

The dollar rose 0.35% to 0.885 against the Swiss franc.

The euro fell 0.27% to $1.0856 against the dollar but was close to a five-month high of $1.09470 hit earlier in the week.

The euro got additional support from Germany’s fiscal policy, which opens a new tab for a reset. Germany’s outgoing lower house of parliament will hold a special session on Thursday to debate a 500 billion euro infrastructure fund and changes to borrowing rules in Europe’s largest economy to boost defense.

“We are expecting the dollar to strengthen and recover but that will depend on how trade and tariff policy takes precedence over the drivers of dollar weakness, including the European recovery and fiscal spending and weaker US data,” Serebriakov added.

The Japanese yen rose 0.28 percent against the dollar to 147.84 yen per dollar, little changed after comments from Bank of Japan (BOJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda reaffirming his determination to shrink the bank's "oversized" balance sheet.

While the BOJ is expected to keep rates unchanged at its policy meeting next week, more than two-thirds of economists polled by Reuters expect rates to be raised by 25 basis points to 0.75% in the third quarter, most likely in July.

Currency markets are also processing data from the previous day that showed US inflation rose slightly less than expected in February, but the relief may be temporary as the data did not fully reflect the impact of Trump's series of tariffs.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, rose 0.12% to 103.71. The index is on track to gain for a second straight day.

The Canadian dollar fell 0.16% against the greenback to C$1.44 per dollar, a day after the Bank of Canada cut its key policy rate by 25 basis points on Wednesday, amid trade tensions that have unnerved traders.
