The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), stopped at 107.44 - down 0.01 points compared to trading on January 25, 2025.

The US dollar eased slightly in the last trading session, after US President Donald Trump made comments calling for lower interest rates while not specifying tariff policies, and as investors awaited a series of policy announcements from global central banks.

The prospect of higher tariffs on imports from countries including China, Canada, Mexico and the euro zone has raised concerns about a new wave of inflation, which has contributed to higher Treasury yields and the dollar in recent months.

In a reverse move, the EUR rose 0.14% to $1.0422.

The greenback fell 1.2% on Monday, its biggest one-day slide since November 2023, as Trump’s first day in office was accompanied by a flurry of executive orders but no tariffs. The dollar hit a more than two-year high of 110.17 on Jan. 13 as the U.S. economy rebounded and expectations of a broad U.S. tariff policy weighed on other currencies.

The British pound rose 0.31% to $1.2354, while the Canadian dollar rose 0.16% to $1.435. The Bank of Canada is expected to cut interest rates at its policy meeting next week after inflation data earlier this week came in below its 2% target.

The Japanese yen rose 0.33% against the greenback to 155.99.

US President Donald Trump also said on January 23 that he expected the US Federal Reserve (Fed) to cut interest rates before the central bank's meeting next week.

The Fed is expected to leave interest rates unchanged at its meeting on January 29. Investors will be watching for any clues that a rate cut could come in March if inflation continues to fall near the US central bank’s 2% annual target.

Data released on January 24 showed US business activity slowed to a nine-month low in January amid rising price pressures, while US existing home sales alone rose to a 10-month high in December.

Meanwhile, US consumer sentiment also fell in January for the first time in six months, amid concerns about the labor market and that prices could rise further if the new Trump administration goes ahead with planned import tariffs.
