Farmers in Thuong Lam commune, Lam Binh district, Tuyen Quang province raise specialty fish densely on Tuyen Quang hydroelectric lake. There are farm owners raising silver carp, cold water sturgeon... with revenue up to tens of billions of VND/year, forming a class of billionaires in Tuyen Quang.

At this time, the family of Mr. Nguyen Van Tung - Director of Giang Tung Cooperative in Thuong Lam Commune, Lam Binh District is actively hiring people to repair, reinforce and build new fish cages. Up to now, his family alone has about 100 fish cages of various types, mainly of precious specialty fish such as bream, catfish, sturgeon...
Specialty fish farming is dense on the surface of Tuyen Quang hydroelectric lake
Previously, Mr. Tung and his wife used to fish on the lake. However, due to the decreasing aquatic resources, fishing has become more difficult. Since 2014, Mr. Tung has been determined to build cages on the lake to raise specialty fish.
"Fish raised in cages on lakes have many advantages, such as being easy to care for, being raised at high density, having readily available food, being able to raise many types of fish, especially specialty fish, contributing to reducing costs in farming and increasing income.
Besides, due to the less polluted environment, high oxygen content in the water, and the constant circulation of water, these are also favorable conditions for caged fish to grow and develop well, with delicious meat quality, favored by the market, so no matter how much we raise, customers come to the wharf to buy it all," Mr. Tung confided.
Every day, Mr. Tung buys small fish to make food to take care of specialty fish.
From a few dozen cages, Mr. Tung and his wife have now expanded their scale to over 100 cages. To ensure enough products to supply customers, in addition to raising long-term specialty fish, he also raises short-term fish cages such as carp, tilapia, grass carp, catfish, etc.
According to Mr. Tung, specialty fish such as bream, sturgeon... must be cared for for 2-3 years to reach a weight of 2.5 - 3 kg. Although they grow slowly, these rare fish are less susceptible to disease, have firm meat, and are very delicious, so they have a higher economic value.
While catfish and grass carp are only sold for about 80,000 VND to 100,000 VND/kg, silver carp and sturgeon are always priced from 170,000 VND to 200,000 VND/kg. On average, each fish cage when harvested will weigh about 3 tons, depending on the type, equivalent to a revenue of about 300 million VND/cage.
Taking advantage of the natural advantages of the lake, in recent years, members of Mr. Tung's cooperative have actively renovated the fish cage area, built floating restaurants, and joined forces to create experiential tours to serve tourists .
"Every year, the cooperative welcomes many visitors to visit the lake and enjoy dishes prepared by the locals from specialty fish. We are continuing to build and improve new services to welcome more visitors," added Director of the cooperative Giang Tung.
According to Mr. Tung, thanks to clean water and available natural food, specialty fish farmers have higher economic efficiency.
Having just invested in cold-water fish farming, Mr. Hoa Tien Nam and members of the Cold-water Fish Cooperative and Ai Au Retreat Co-Operative Tourism Service have invested more than 1 billion VND to build a sturgeon farming model at the Ai Au lighthouse in Thuong Lam commune.
Billionaire in Tuyen Quang raises specialty fish
According to Mr. Nam, sturgeon are raised mainly in winter and sold in spring. To have fish available for sale on time, he usually buys fingerlings of about 1kg each. However, when raising fingerlings that large, the investment in fingerlings and feed will be much larger than raising them from small, but in return, the income is also better.
Mr. Nam said that in the early days of raising cold water fish, due to lack of techniques and buying poor quality fish fry, the cooperative suffered heavy losses. Learning from the failure, the members of the cooperative imported eggs to hatch fish fry to serve both the farm and the people in the commune.
"Up to now, we have successfully raised 2 fish farms with an area of about 2,000m2. On average, we harvest about 20 tons of sturgeon each year. This year, the cooperative decided to expand the scale of farming, expecting to have a herd of 40,000 fish, equivalent to an output of 80 tons of commercial fish. It is estimated that our revenue from raising sturgeon will reach over 8 billion VND/year," Mr. Nam added.
Mr. Tung built more cages to raise specialty fish on the lake bed in Lam Binh district, Tuyen Quang.
Up to this point, the whole Thuong Lam commune has about 326 fish cages, an increase of 8 cages compared to 2023. Currently, aquaculture in general and specialty fish farming in particular are bringing outstanding economic efficiency in the local economic structure. On average, each year, Thuong Lam achieves a total output of about 400 tons of fish, with a revenue of more than 40 billion VND.
According to Ms. Quan Thi Cat - Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Thuong Lam commune, cage fish farming and specialty fish farming have helped many households in the commune get rich quickly. In particular, many households and cooperatives have been actively expanding the scale of farming combined with developing unique eco-tourism and experiential tourism, bringing in very high income.
"Income from fish farming is playing a very important role in improving people's income criteria, promoting the process of building advanced new rural areas and model new rural areas of the commune," Ms. Cat affirmed.
Besides raising specialty fish, Mr. Tung also raises Koi fish to serve tourists.
Mr. Hoa Tien Nam - Director of the Ai Au Retreat Co-Operative Cold Water Fish and Tourism Service Cooperative in Thuong Lam commune, Lam Binh district harvests fish to sell to customers at the unit's farm.
