Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta is one of the most passionate stadiums in Southeast Asia. It used to hold up to 110,000 people when it was first put into operation in 1962. Today, after several upgrades, Gelora Bung Karno Stadium can hold more than 77,000 people.

With the above number of people, the audience effect created at Gelora Bung Karno stadium was extremely terrible, causing the away teams to hesitate.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the national teams and the U23 team of Vietnam have never won against representatives of Indonesian football at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, in official tournaments. This is the reason why Indonesia is very confident when choosing Gelora Bung Karno Stadium as its home stadium, to welcome representatives of Vietnamese football.

Going back in history, not counting the final match of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship on July 29, the most recent match between the two football powers of Vietnam and Indonesia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium was the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia.

On March 21, 2024, the Indonesian team beat the Vietnamese team 1-0 on this field, in the World Cup qualifiers. That was when the Vietnamese team was led by coach Philippe Troussier (French).

Previously, at the AFF Cup 2022, the Vietnamese team, which was very strong under coach Park Hang Seo (Korean), could only draw 0-0 with the Indonesian team when the team was weakened, in the first leg of the semi-finals of the above tournament. The match took place on January 6, 2023.

From the beginning of the 21st century until July 29 this year, the Indonesian national team and U23 team had never lost to Vietnamese football representatives at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (Photo: VFF).

The Vietnamese team then entered the final thanks to a 2-0 victory in the second leg of the final at My Dinh Stadium, on January 9, 2023.

In 2011, at the 26th SEA Games, the U23 Vietnam team lost 0-2 to U23 Indonesia in the semi-final match at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on November 19, 2011. At that time, U23 Vietnam was led by coach Falko Goetz (German).

Continuing to turn back the clock, on December 21, 2002, the Vietnamese team drew 2-2 with the Indonesian team in the group stage match of the 2002 AFF Cup. Striker Le Huynh Duc and midfielder Phan Van Tai Em were the ones who scored for coach Henrique Calisto's team (Portuguese) that year.

Huynh Duc and Tai Em are also rare figures to score for the Vietnamese teams against Indonesia in the 21st century at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in official tournaments.

On July 29, everything changed. Vietnam U23 defeated Indonesia U23 1-0 in the final match of the Southeast Asian U23 tournament. For the first time in this century, a high-level team (U23, national team) of Vietnamese football won against Indonesia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, in a large-scale official international tournament.

By scoring against U23 Indonesia in the final match on July 29, Nguyen Cong Phuong became the third Vietnamese football player, after Huynh Duc and Tai Em, to score against Indonesia this century at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
