According to information from Tam Anh General Hospital (HCMC), a 25-year-old woman came to the hospital with an abnormally large abdomen.
Through medical history, it was found that the patient was previously 1m65 tall, with a waist circumference of 56 cm. For about a year now, her belly has been getting bigger, the patient thought it was due to her busy work and stress causing her weight gain, so she did not go to the doctor. Then, thinking she was pregnant, the patient went to the hospital for a check-up, an ultrasound showed two tumors on both sides of the ovaries, of which the cyst on the left was 13 cm in diameter.
According to Dr. Huynh Ngoc Thu Tra, Obstetrics and Gynecology Center, the patient's abdomen was as big as a 4-month pregnancy due to two large tumors in the ovaries. This tumor was caused by endometrial cells (which should only exist in the uterus) growing on both sides of the ovaries, forming cysts containing dark brown fluid like chocolate, including blood and endometrium.
The surgeon performed laparoscopic surgery, aspirated 1.5 liters of brown fluid, then removed the tumor, preserving as much healthy tissue as possible on both sides of the ovary to minimize damage to the organ. After surgery, the patient's abdomen was slimmer and she was discharged after two days.

Endometriosis cysts in the ovaries are benign, but Dr. Tra advises women not to be subjective because it greatly affects their lives and fertility. People with the disease often suffer from chronic pelvic pain and ovarian dysfunction.
The cause of endometriosis is currently unknown. Some studies suggest that the disease occurs due to retrograde menstruation, genetics, hormones or a history of abdominal surgery that easily causes endometrial tissue to form and develop.
If not detected and treated promptly, women may experience some complications such as tumor rupture causing peritonitis, adnexal torsion leading to pain and ovarian necrosis. Large tumors compress the pelvic organs causing ureteral dilation, hydronephrosis, etc. Signs that may warn of the disease are dull lower abdominal pain, the pain increases before or during menstruation. Sometimes there is pain during intercourse, and a tumor can be felt protruding in the abdomen below the navel. Some cases have no symptoms, the tumor is only discovered during a routine health check.
There is currently no way to prevent ovarian tumors, but the progression of the disease can be slowed by medical treatment such as hormonal drugs as prescribed by your doctor.
