“They are a very strong team, playing at a high level, always preparing well for each match. I still don’t know which player is the most dangerous on the U23 Vietnam team. I will review their semi-final match and the group stage matches to make a more detailed assessment,” assistant coach Van Kempen said at a press conference after the match with U23 Thailand.
In the semi-final, U23 Indonesia drew 1-1 with U23 Thailand after 90 minutes of regulation time and held each other to a draw in two extra periods. In the penalty shootout, the home team defeated their opponents 7-6 to win the match and advance to the final match of the tournament.
As coach Gerald Vanenburg lost his voice after the match, assistant coach Van Kempen spoke on his behalf at the press conference. He shared: “We are very happy to have won. It was an extremely tense match. The penalty shootout made us all burst out. The players were exhausted, but the important thing is that the whole team played resiliently and reached the final.”
The assistant also revealed that the U23 Indonesia coaching staff had made some unexpected tactical adjustments. “We implemented strategies that we had never practiced before, such as making more crosses. It was great that those changes worked. Today, the whole team will rest and tomorrow we will start preparing for the final match against U23 Vietnam,” he added.
On the other side, U23 Thailand coach Sorawat Phosaman congratulated his opponent. “This was a good match, both teams played fair. However, we made some mistakes and failed to take advantage of our opportunities. It’s a pity we couldn’t make it to the final,” the Thai coach shared.
The final match between U23 Indonesia and U23 Vietnam will take place at 8pm on July 29 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. This is the first time the two teams have met in this year's tournament and promises to be a dramatic match as both teams aim for the championship.
