UEFA has confirmed that Britain and Ireland will host Euro 2028, after main rival Turkey withdrew from the race.

Specifically, the United Kingdom (including England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) and the Republic of Ireland will co-host the Euro 2028 finals. The Euro 2028 finals will take place at 10 different stadiums, including 6 stadiums in England: Wembley, Villa Park, St James' Park, Etihad, Bramley Moore Dock and Tottenham Hotspur.

Meanwhile, the remaining four stadiums in other countries are the Principality Stadium in Cardiff (Wales), Aviva in Dublin (Republic of Ireland), Hampden Park in Glasgow (Scotland) and Casement Park in Belfast (Northern Ireland). Cardiff will host the opening match and the final will take place at Wembley. The number of tickets expected to be sold for Euro 2028 matches is 3 million.

In addition to announcing the host of Euro 2028, the European Football Federation also announced the host of Euro 2032. Accordingly, Italy and Türkiye will be co-hosts of Euro 2032.

Initially, Türkiye and Italy entered the race to host Euro 2028, but later withdrew so the hosting rights went to the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

Türkiye will host the 2023 Champions League final, but has never hosted a major international tournament. Italy, meanwhile, hosted the Euros in 1968 and 1980.

The Euro is the most prestigious football tournament for European national teams. The tournament was first held in France in 1960, with the Soviet Union being the first team to win the championship. To date, the tournament has been around for more than 40 years, with the two most successful teams being Spain and Germany, both having won the championship three times.

Euro 2028 is expected to be the first tournament to include 32 participating countries, instead of the current 24. In 2016, Euro 2016 expanded from 16 to 24 teams. UEFA also introduced a rule that no more than two countries hosting the tournament automatically qualify for the finals. Germany will host Euro 2024 next year./.
