Reuters reported on July 31 that Ukraine announced it would begin negotiations with the United States on security guarantees before Kiev could join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
“We will start negotiations with the United States this week. Security guarantees for Ukraine will include specific and long-term obligations. These will be clearly drafted formats and mechanisms of assistance. Security guarantees will be in force until Ukraine is granted NATO membership,” said Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential administration.

According to Reuters, negotiations on security guarantees for Ukraine are the next step following the commitments made by the Group of Seven (G7) at the recent NATO summit in Lithuania.
