Ukraine worried about Russia launching 10,000km ballistic missile

The Main Directorate of Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR) believes that Moscow is planning to conduct a test launch of the RS-24 ICBM from a launch site near the village of Svobodny in the Sverdlovsk region of the Russian Federation.

According to information from Kiev, the missile will be launched by combat crews of the 433rd Regiment, 42nd Division of the 31st Army Corps of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces. The General Intelligence Directorate also said that this three-stage solid-fuel ballistic missile has a range of more than 10,000 km. Russia has not yet commented on the above information.

According to Ukraine, this move is aimed at threatening and putting pressure on Ukraine, the European Union (EU) and NATO countries.

Russia does not usually announce plans to test nuclear-capable missiles, saying the details are classified as military secrets. However, Moscow usually issues a statement after each launch.

More than three years since the conflict began, Ukraine is under increasing pressure as Russia seeks to expand its control on the eastern front, while diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have so far yielded no concrete results.

In a post on the Truth Social platform on May 17, President Donald Trump said he would speak with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine next week with the goal of pushing for a final agreement to end the fighting. The two sides met in Istanbul a day earlier for talks. Although the meeting lasted less than two hours and did not result in a ceasefire, the two sides agreed to a prisoner exchange.

In an official statement, the Ukrainian General Intelligence Service stated: “In order to pressure and threaten Ukraine, as well as EU and NATO member states, Russia plans to conduct a “combat training” launch of an RS-24 intercontinental ballistic missile from the Yars system on the night of May 19, 2025.”

President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on May 17: “I will be speaking with President Vladimir Putin of Russia on May 19th at 10am. The call will focus on ending the bloodbath that is killing over 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers each week, as well as trade. I will then speak with President Zelensky of Ukraine and many NATO leaders. Hopefully it will be a productive day, a ceasefire will be reached, and this terrible conflict, which should never have happened, will be brought to an end. God bless us all.”

In a post on X, President Zelensky continued to call on the international community to increase pressure on Moscow, emphasizing the application of sanctions if Russia does not pursue a substantive diplomatic solution.

“Without tougher sanctions and stronger pressure, Russia will not resort to genuine diplomacy,” Zelensky wrote.
