Applying technical advances in the production of Bliss potatoes towards linking product consumption in Hai Duong province (Hai Phong city)

On the afternoon of August 15, 2025, the representative of the Project Management Board of the Application of technical advances in the production of Bliss potatoes in the direction of linking product consumption in Hai Duong province (Hai Phong city) under the Institute of Biology reported the implementation results to the Advisory Council for evaluation and acceptance of the results of the implementation of scientific and technological tasks at the city level. Dr. Le Luong Thinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, is the Chairman of the Council.

The project has organized 04 training courses for 200 people to grasp the technical process of cultivating Bliss potato varieties, encouraged households to use potato varieties for processing with guaranteed output and apply new comprehensive technical measures to increase productivity, quality and economic efficiency, and at the same time organized propaganda work well. During the implementation process, 25 hectares (1,300 kg of seeds/ha) of commercial production models of Bliss potato varieties imported from Australia were built in Ngu Hung (Thanh Mien), Doan Thuong (Gia Loc) and Nam Tan (Nam Sach). The average yield of the model was 20.1 tons/ha, high and increased by 19.5% compared to the Atlantic variety (16.8 tons/ha), the old variety used for processing. The rate of tubers meeting processing standards was high at 18.2 tons/ha, increased by 33.2% compared to the Atlantic variety (specific rate meeting processing standards was 13.7 tons/ha); Profit reached 72.5 million VND/ha, nearly double compared to Atlantic variety (reaching 35.7 million VND/ha).

The project management board has also completed the cultivation process of Bliss potato varieties suitable for the conditions of Hai Duong province (Hai Phong city), in which the fertilizer level and planting density are suitable for the cultivation technique of commercial production of Bliss potato varieties (density of 5 clumps/ ^m2 , equivalent to 1.3-1.4 tons of seeds/ha depending on the size of the seed tubers; fertilizer level according to the ratio of 150N: _150P2O5 : _150K2O + 10 tons of manure for 01 _ha or _150N : _150P2O5 : _150K2O + 2 tons of biofertilizer for 01 ha). The care, cultivation, weeding, watering, pest control, and harvesting regimes according to the techniques are also recommended locally and are detailed in the technical process.

During the 2 years of implementing the model, the project has linked to purchase all products for households in the implementation area. The total amount of quality potatoes purchased was 456.19 tons, accounting for 90.8% of the total potato output obtained from the model (502.52 tons) meeting the set requirements. The total revenue of the model reached 3,824,930,000 VND with the potato purchase price in 2023-2024 fluctuating from 8,000 - 8,500 VND/kg.

With the above results, the Council unanimously accepted the project; at the same time, it proposed that the Management Board edit and supplement some contents such as: reviewing the uniformity of data (fertilizer quantity, yield, economic efficiency calculation); clarifying information on granting import certificates from Australia for Bliss potato varieties; reviewing the planting season to perfect the process and recommending to people how to use and propagate varieties; clarifying the possibility of replicating the model.
