According to a survey, fresh lychees imported from Hai Duong, Hung Yen, and Bac Giang are being sold in supermarkets and traditional markets, with a common price of 40,000 - 60,000 VND/kg (depending on the type).
However, since the beginning of June, a type of lychee originating from China with an extremely expensive price has been "making waves" in the Vietnamese market, with a selling price of about 1 million VND for 1.2 kg (equivalent to 800,000 VND/kg), which is seedless lychee. Although the price is many times higher than domestic lychee, this fruit is still being bought by many curious customers.
Introducing this unique lychee, an employee at Ume Fruits (Dong Da District, Hanoi) said that the seedless lychee variety originated from Hainan Province, China. According to the Chinese Lychee Research Association, this is the only seedless lychee variety in the world that has been bred and grown in Hainan Province, China since 1997. This fruit has a pink-red outer shell, is juicy, sweet, has thick flesh and especially has no seeds or very small seeds, just like beans.
According to this employee, because of the high price, the store only imports a small quantity of seedless lychees, about a few dozen kilograms at a time. However, immediately after being imported, seedless lychees often quickly "sell out" because many customers pre-order them. " Perhaps in the near future, we will increase the amount of imported goods to ensure timely service to customers' needs ," said this employee.
" Each box of lychee weighing 1.2kg is packed in a shockproof, impact-resistant box to prevent the lychee from being bruised or crushed during transportation. Currently, the selling price for a 1.2kg box of seedless lychee is 980,000 VND. Because of the high price, not all customers can easily buy it. In my opinion, most customers buy it out of curiosity or as a gift ," the staff added.
Chinese seedless lychee is being sought after by Vietnamese customers.
Ms. Nguyen Tam (Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi ) - an online seller said: " I am selling each set of Chinese seedless lychee for 1,150,000 VND/2kg, equivalent to nearly 600,000 VND/kg. This is a precious lychee originating from Hainan island of China, officially imported to Vietnam through customs ."
According to Ms. Tam, despite the high price of fabric, her first shipment imported to Vietnam on June 10 was sold out by customers.
" I have heard that this fruit has been successfully grown domestically, but it is very difficult to find and buy. Currently, the market is mainly imported from China ," Ms. Tam added.
