Arne Slot's team suffered a humiliating 0-4 defeat at the Etihad Stadium last weekend. It was a match where the Liverpool players displayed a lack of determination and a defeatist attitude, leading to 8,000 of their fans leaving the stadium before the final whistle.
Liverpool captain Van Dijk admitted his fault. He said: "I can only apologize to the fans for what we showed, especially in the second half. Liverpool shouldn't have given up so early. We let the fans down, let ourselves down, and let the manager down. The way we played in the second half was certainly heartbreaking for everyone. I am heartbroken too."
Liverpool have now lost all hope of winning domestic trophies and must focus on winning the Champions League to salvage a disastrous season.
Van Dijk urged: "PSG are waiting for us. The game will be very difficult again. So we have to be mentally ready as soon as possible. I was lucky enough to play for Liverpool for many years. The most important thing we always had was unity."
Van Dijk added: "We have a responsibility to ourselves and especially to the fans. If we want to achieve success this season, we have to try to create something special in the next three games. I'm trying to think about how to turn things around."
