'Literature needs to transform itself to integrate into the mainstream of the new era.'

According to the Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association , in the current policy of streamlining the organizational structure, literary work also needs to transform to meet the demands of the times.

Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association, Nguyen Quang Thieu, delivered a speech at the Conference summarizing literary work in 2024.

Literature needs to innovate in order to integrate into the mainstream of the nation in the new era – the era of national resurgence.

This was a statement made by the Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association, Nguyen Quang Thieu, at the Conference summarizing literary work in 2024, held on December 12th in Hanoi .

Referring to Resolution 18 on streamlining the organizational structure of the political system for effective and efficient operation, poet Nguyen Quang Thieu affirmed that this is a correct and urgent policy in the current context, and that literary work also needs to transform to meet the demands of the times.

In his report summarizing literary activities in 2024 and outlining plans for the new phase, poet Nguyen Quang Thieu emphasized: “2024, the final year of the 10th term (2020-2025), is associated with many important events for the country. This is also a special period marking major turning points, an opportunity for organizations to transform and change.”

In 2025, the Vietnam Writers Association will hold its 11th National Congress. The President of the Vietnam Writers Association hopes that the Executive Committee of the 11th term will have innovative and strategic thinking to contribute to the development of national literature.

According to poet Nguyen Quang Thieu, the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Writers Association has been and continues to make innovations. Literature needs to integrate into the mainstream. Without comprehensive thinking and understanding, it can easily be left behind and unable to develop.

Regarding the work of awarding literary prizes and admitting new members in 2024, the President of the Vietnam Writers Association acknowledged the effective and responsible work of the specialized councils.

Regarding foreign relations, poet Huu Viet said that 2024 was a fairly active year for the Association's foreign relations activities. Many embassies and diplomatic agencies discussed cooperation, translation, and promotion of literature.

Regarding the Vietnam Writers Association's international activities, in August 2024, poet Nguyen Quang Thieu worked with Harvard University on documents about President Ho Chi Minh and also visited and worked with American veteran writers; in December 2024, poet Huu Viet attended Cambodia's National Writers' Day and worked with writers from countries through which the Mekong River flows...

Besides traditional partners, the Association has also expanded its relations with new partners such as South Africa, Türkiye, Pakistan, India, and several other cultural diplomatic organizations. The Association also proposed, and received government approval, to award the Friendship Medal to two American veteran writers and poets: Kevin Bowen and Bruce Weigl. This has received positive feedback from domestic and international public opinion.
