The Chiêm Hóa Regional Health Center ( Tuyên Quang ) received a male patient who came for examination complaining of eye irritation, burning pain, and tearing after washing his face with water – water sourced from mountain streams and springs used for daily life.
Upon examination, doctors discovered a leech attached to the patient's eye. The foreign object was subsequently removed safely, and the patient's health is now stable.
According to doctors, brackish water is a natural water source drawn from mountain streams and springs for daily use. However, if not properly filtered and treated, this water can contain leeches and many other small organisms, posing a potential risk of entering the body during bathing or other daily activities.
Experts advise people to regularly inspect and clean their water storage tanks and household water supply systems. The water used should be filtered and treated appropriately before consumption.
People should avoid using water directly from pipes or drains for washing their faces or bathing to reduce the risk of foreign organisms entering their eyes, nose, or ears.
If you experience symptoms such as eye irritation, burning pain, prolonged tearing, or suspect a foreign object in your eye, you should seek medical attention promptly. Attempting to remove the foreign object yourself at home can cause eye damage and increase the risk of complications.
