About the place of white flower coffee under a blue sky

In the early days of the dry season, as coffee blossoms blanket the hillsides in white, Lam Dong enters the most beautiful moment of its production cycle. The flowering season not only brings a pristine beauty but is also a crucial period for determining the yield of the new crop year.

Coffee blossoms always attract many people.

Flowering season - a signal of a new crop

Visiting Lam Dong during the coffee blossom season is a rare opportunity to fully appreciate the beauty of the fertile red basalt soil. After harvesting, the coffee plants are watered for a few months, depending on the growth rate of the trees. Just one unseasonal rain or a well-timed watering is all it takes for the coffee blossoms to burst open simultaneously, covering the hillsides in white. The pure white flowers spread a delicate fragrance throughout the highland landscape.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoan, the owner of a coffee farm spanning over 15 hectares in Duc Lap commune, after a dry period of 2-3 months, the trees begin to differentiate flower buds. When there is enough water, the flower buds will bloom, initiating the pollination process and fruit formation. Therefore, the flowering period is considered a crucial stage of the crop year, largely determining the subsequent harvest yield.

According to Mr. Hoan, this year, during the flowering period, many coffee-growing areas experienced unseasonal rain, with some places experiencing unusually prolonged rainfall from early morning to noon, such as in the communes of Truong Xuan, Thuan Hanh, and Dak Song... Under normal conditions, scattered rains do not cause significant impact, as coffee plants can flower in multiple cycles and ensure a high fruit yield for the crop. "However, if rain occurs when the flower bud differentiation is not yet high, the plants will produce lemon-like flowers. And if rain occurs right when the flowers are in full bloom, the pollination process may be interrupted, causing the flowers to rot and fall off, affecting the fruit set rate," Mr. Hoan added.

That's just the initial difficulty of the season. According to forecasts from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , the weather in 2026 may be milder than in 2025, but there will be a clear transition between hot and cold periods, and the possibility of unusual phenomena still exists. Therefore, for coffee plants, which have high water requirements, this is a noteworthy factor. The period from May to June is when the plants need a lot of water to nourish the fruit. If the rainy season arrives late or the rainfall is low, water shortages may occur, forcing growers to scramble to provide water for their plantations.

Mr. Tran Van Dat from Cu Jut commune said: "In recent years, exploiting groundwater to irrigate coffee plantations during the dry season has become common practice among many coffee growers. However, groundwater levels in some areas are starting to decline, making it difficult to supply water to the plantations at the end of the dry season."

Towards sustainable farming

Currently, after the merger, Lam Dong has the largest coffee growing area in the country, with 327,000 hectares and an estimated production of over 1 million tons, accounting for more than half of the country's total coffee production and playing a crucial role in the export coffee supply chain. Facing challenges from climate change, many sustainable coffee farming models are being encouraged locally. Measures such as water-saving irrigation, mulching, multi-layer intercropping, planting shade trees and windbreaks, and soil improvement are considered effective solutions. These measures gradually reduce pressure on water resources and enhance the adaptability of the crop.

Amidst the pristine white blossoms of the coffee plants against the azure sky of the highlands, the story of the coffee plant today is not just about the harvest season, but also about the adaptation journey of farmers to climate change. Therefore, sustainable development has become the inevitable direction for the coffee industry in Lam Dong.
