Expanding the area for growing "natural vegetables"

Taking advantage of the potential of many high-altitude ecological zones ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level, many farms have actively restored soil fertility to cultivate "natural vegetables," protecting the health of producers and consumers, and gradually increasing income per unit area of land.

Combining experience with new technology

The Vi Xua farm in P'ré village, Duc Trong commune, covers a total area of 20 hectares. It has been divided in half for decades to plant pine forests to green the high hills and to cultivate vegetables and fruits in harmony with the natural environment. This place has become a supply and traceability point for products linked in an increased value chain for businesses and cooperatives inside and outside Lam Dong province.

Farmer Nguyen Thi My Ai, a "partner" of the farm, said that the farm harvests and replants over 30 varieties of organic vegetables and fruits year-round, covering a total area of more than 4 hectares outdoors. Ms. Ai shared: "The organic vegetables at Vi Xua Farm all follow updated technical procedures: preparing loose soil beds, applying organic fertilizer, irrigating with water from a drilled well pumped into a reservoir of microorganisms, weeding by hand, and harvesting and replanting cycles of around 30 days..."

To keep up with the latest science and technology , Ms. Ai's daughter, a bioengineer, also joined Vi Xua Farm to directly cultivate beneficial microorganisms on-site to improve soil quality, inhibit disease development, rapidly decompose organic matter, and increase the resistance of commercial vegetables and fruits. Mr. Au Truong Thanh, the owner of Vi Xua Farm, said that after harvesting, vegetables and fruits are left to grow naturally with grass and other plants for more than 30 days. Then, the roots, stems, and leaves are plowed up and buried deep underground along with organic fertilizer and antagonistic microorganisms and fungi to nourish them and harvest organic produce each season. Although the yield of organic vegetables and fruits is only 40-50% of conventional vegetables and fruits, the selling price is 50% or more higher.

Expanding areas dedicated to organic crop cultivation.

Besides familiar domestic customers and distribution points, Vi Xua Farm's organic vegetables and fruits have begun participating in a supply chain with Nguyen Minh Clean Vegetable Cooperative and an organic agricultural enterprise in the province, thus expanding their price and market potential. Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong, the representative in charge of the supply chain, stated that the total area of organic vegetables and fruits under contract ensures a stable output of 8-9 tons per month, corresponding to production on over 7 hectares. This includes 3 hectares of greenhouses in Nam Ban commune, Lam Ha district, and 4 hectares belonging to Vi Xua Farm.

Statistics show that Lam Dong province currently has nearly 2,100 hectares of organic crops such as vegetables, mushrooms, rice, fruit trees, tea, coffee, macadamia nuts, medicinal herbs, cashew nuts, and fodder crops. Over the past five years, the Lam Dong Agricultural Extension Center has supported nearly 10 organizations and individuals in completing the procedures to obtain trademark and logo certification for organic agricultural products from the Intellectual Property Office, and has regularly organized trade promotion activities nationwide.

"

The province's organic agriculture development program has been creating a solid foundation in technical processes, building effective production models, increasing the competitiveness of agricultural products, and protecting the ecological environment and human health.

Mr. Pham Thanh Son, Deputy Head of the Crop and Forestry Extension Department, Provincial Agricultural Extension Center

With the goal of making the province's organic agriculture a leader nationwide, Mr. Pham Thanh Son - Deputy Head of the Crop and Forestry Extension Department, Provincial Agricultural Extension Center - proposed more active coordination from all levels and sectors, especially the deployment of financial resources and policy solutions in a more synchronized and timely manner. Currently, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center is continuing to develop a project for the development of organic crop cultivation in the period 2026 - 2030 with a total area of approximately 11,200 hectares, thereby further diversifying products, increasing income for producers, and contributing to ensuring the overall growth rate of the province's agricultural sector…
