According to GizChina , the lack of dedicated graphics card support on the Mac Pro M2 Ultra, Apple's top-of-the-line product at the moment, is truly puzzling. This is because the absence of a dedicated graphics card means professionals will need to use the internal GPU solution that Apple provides with the M2 Ultra.
Therefore, Apple's hardware engineering director, John Ternus, had to provide an explanation for the company's actions.
The Mac Pro M2 Ultra has 6 PCI Express slots, but none of them support graphics cards.
In a recently shared interview, Ternus stated that the new model "doesn't need an external graphics card because all operations are handled by the M2 Ultra chip." He further explained that the M2 Ultra chip architecture of the new Mac Pro is based on shared memory and optimization, where optimization would be compromised if external graphics card support were available – which is not the direction Apple wants to pursue.
Reportedly, the M2 Ultra chip in the Mac Pro is said to be three times faster than the Intel-based Mac Pro in terms of video transcoding and 3D modeling capabilities. More precisely, the video processing capabilities of the new model are on par with the Intel-based version with seven Afterburner cards.
Furthermore, a recent report suggests that the M2 Ultra has nearly the same power as the RTX 4080 – Nvidia's second-fastest graphics card. Therefore, when a system already delivers excellent overall performance, equipping the Mac Pro M2 Ultra with a dedicated graphics card seems unnecessary.
Besides the lack of support for dedicated graphics cards, another aspect of the Mac Pro M2 Ultra that has users wondering is the lack of RAM upgrade capability. This also stems from the unified nature of the M2 Ultra chip. Compared to Mac Pro models using Intel CPUs, the M2 Ultra model has all its components interconnected, so Apple soldered the RAM directly to the chipset.
