Why is your hair falling out so much?

VnExpressVnExpress15/07/2023

Using chemical hair dyes or styling products, stress, medication, or hormonal changes can all cause significant hair loss.

According to Dr. Ta Tung Duy from the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, hair loss is related to the hair's life cycle. The hair growth cycle goes through three distinct stages. The growth phase lasts 2-8 years, followed by the transitional phase, after which hair stops growing and moves to the final stage in just a few weeks. At this point, old hair strands are pushed out of the hair follicles and the process of new hair growth begins.

Excessive hair loss, for example, where simply running your finger through your hair causes unusual hair to fall out, could be due to your hair styling habits or an underlying health problem.

Here are some reasons why hair falls out:

Stress

Unusual hair loss can be caused by telogen effluvium – hair loss following a period of stress. These stressors include illness, rapid weight changes, job loss, the death of a loved one, or divorce.

Chemicals

Hair care is an essential need, but hair perms, dyes, straightening treatments, and the mechanical effects of hair dryers and curling irons put increased stress on the hair. The hair shaft becomes dry, hair follicles shrink, and more strands fall out.

Head washing

Hair loss during shampooing is very common because the hair follicles are loose and more prone to shedding than usual. Using shampoo that is not suitable for your scalp can damage the hair follicles. Brushing wet, tangled hair also increases the risk of hair loss.

Medications, hormones

Certain medications used to treat cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and depression can cause hair loss. Pregnancy, childbirth, thyroid problems, menopause, iron or protein deficiencies, and hormonal imbalances can also lead to hair loss.

Behavioral disorders

Trichotillomania, also known as hair pulling disorder, is a type of impulse control disorder. Patients frequently pull out hair from their scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes, unable to control themselves, leading to excessive hair loss and bald patches on the scalp.

According to doctors, there are many ways to better care for your hair to prevent breakage. First, you should use a wide-toothed comb to detangle your hair, being careful not to run your fingers through or twist it. Next, using gentle products such as hair-friendly shampoos and applying conditioner after each wash can help reduce breakage. Limit the use of heat styling tools like hair dryers or curling irons; limit the use of chemicals like perms and hair dyes, which weaken hair and make it prone to breakage.

A balanced diet, with sufficient protein and iron, is essential for healthy and beautiful hair. If you notice an unusually high amount of hair loss—an average of more than 100 strands per day—see a doctor to determine the cause and receive proper treatment.
