According to Blazetrends , shortly after the name change was announced, Twitter was rebranded with a prominent “X” to represent Twitter’s new “face and personality.” Describing “X,” the company said: “X is the future of limitless interaction, focused on audio, video , messaging, payments/banking, creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI (artificial intelligence), X will connect us all in ways we are only beginning to imagine.”

The problem is that both Meta and Microsoft currently own the intellectual property rights to the letter “X.” So in the future, Musk may have to fight a legal battle with these giants to protect the social platform’s new image.
According to trademark attorney Josh Gerben, “there is a near 100% chance that someone will sue the X symbol” because “there are nearly 900 active trademark registrations in the United States that include the letter X.” Owners of these trademarks could claim that the use of the “X” is likely to cause confusion among consumers and sue based on this infringement. The verdict could include large fines and even blocking Twitter from using the “X.”
Microsoft has had the X trademark in relation to its Xbox gaming space since 2003. Meta, in 2019, registered a trademark with the letter “X” painted in blue and white for use in the software and social networking sectors.
So far, neither Elon Musk, Meta, nor Microsoft have made any public statements on the matter. Some trademark law experts even believe that the two tech companies will not pursue lawsuits against Twitter, at least until they feel threatened by the confusion Elon Musk’s new platform creates in the minds of users.
