Flexor tendonitis

VnExpressVnExpress12/11/2023

Inflamed tendons in the fingers will not be able to flex or extend normally. Sometimes the unaffected hand must be used to pull the finger out before it can be bent or extended.

Define

Flexor tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendon sheath in the flexor tendon area of the finger. In some cases, fibrous nodules may appear inside the tendon sheath, causing narrowing of the tendon sheath and hindering tendon movement when flexing or extending the finger.

Reason

- This is a chronic disease.

- Usually comes from the accumulation of damage to the tendon sheath of the finger over a long period of time leading to inflammation and pain.

Who is susceptible to flexor tendonitis?

- Finger flexor tendon injuries are common in people who do jobs that require a lot of hand use, such as:

* Farmer.

* Surgeon.

* Barber.

* Office staff...

- It can be caused by ligament and tendon injuries to the fingers while playing sports that are not treated promptly.

- Sometimes it can be a complication of certain diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout and diabetes.

Symptom

- The initial symptom of flexor tendonitis is often discomfort when bending or stretching the finger.

- If left untreated, the disease can progress and cause the fingers to automatically fold in on themselves.

- Sometimes, the interphalangeal joint near the palm feels painful and uncomfortable.

Treatment

- In mild cases, the doctor may prescribe treatments to reduce inflammation and restore the function of the tendon sheath after inflammation.

* Use of drugs.

* Acupuncture.

* Thread implantation.

* Massage.

* Physical therapy.

- In addition to using drugs to reduce inflammation and pain, it is necessary to combine measures, including:

* Stop all activities that affect the finger tendons.

* Rest your fingers and limit unnecessary movements.

* Use wrist and finger protectors to immobilize the fingers and prevent further injury.

* Apply cold compresses to the swollen area to reduce pain. Note, only apply for 10-15 minutes at a time and only apply a maximum of 3-4 times per day.

* Use sports tape to support your fingers during movement.

- In severe cases, surgery may be indicated.

Prevent

- Give your fingers and hands a proper rest after strenuous exercise.

- Some exercises should be done to strengthen the muscles in the arms and improve mobility.
