Institute of Forensic Science invents 'magic eye' to prevent children from being forgotten on school buses

The Institute of Criminal Science (Ministry of Public Security) has researched and produced a warning device to prevent students from being left behind on school buses and has recently installed it on 10 school buses in Vinh Phuc.

The operating principle of the device is that when the driver turns off the engine and gets out of the car, someone must go to the back of the car to check if there are any children in the car and press the confirmation button.

If this button is not pressed, the vehicle has not been checked and after 3 minutes the device will ring and the light will flash.

When the bell rings but the driver has not pressed the button, the device will automatically call the driver's number to notify that the vehicle has not been inspected.

If the driver still does not return to the car to check, the device will dial 2 registered people to notify.

Speaking to VietNamNet reporter, Colonel Nguyen Do Hai Nam, Director of the Center for Research, Application, Development and Transfer of Forensic Science Technology (Institute of Forensic Science, Ministry of Public Security ) said: The device to warn against forgetting children on shuttle buses was introduced at the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition in 2024.

According to Mr. Nam, from the beginning of 2025, the unit has started mass production, initially, the product is operating stably.

Mr. Nam said that the Center has signed a contract with mobile network operator Viettel to reduce the cost of mobile packages during the operation of the device.

Recently, in Vinh Phuc province, the Center installed the device on 10 school buses in Vinh Yen city and was highly appreciated and satisfied by the drivers because the device was easy to install and use.

Most recently, on May 29, 2024, Mr. NVL (60 years old, residing in Thai Binh province) drove a 29-seat car to pick up and drop off students and forgot a child, causing the victim to die.

In response to tragic incidents involving school buses, the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety, which will take effect from January 1, 2025, has regulations on ensuring safety for vehicles transporting students to school.

Specifically, cars must have image recording devices and warning functions to prevent children from being left in the car.
