According to Independent, Vienna city still maintains a high ranking on the Global Liveability Index - the ranking of the "Global Liveability Index" of the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) - an economic research and analysis agency of the Economist Group media company based in London (UK).
The EIU index provides an assessment of the challenges to an individual's quality of life in 173 cities around the world. The EIU ranks each city based on 30 factors across five broad categories: Stability, Healthcare, Culture and Environment, Education and Infrastructure.
The 2023 average score rose to a 15-year high, helped by stability restored after the global Covid-19 pandemic, and positive signs in the healthcare and education sectors in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
The report released on June 22 shows that the capital of Austria continues to be the most livable city in the world with an outstanding combination of stability, good infrastructure, high-quality education and health care services, culture and entertainment.
Vienna’s only negative is its “relative lack of major sporting events.” In 2021, the “City of Music” slipped in the rankings as its famous museums and restaurants faced strict restrictions in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Copenhagen is ranked second in the list of the world's most livable cities. The Danish capital has maintained this ranking for the second consecutive year thanks to its positive policies for residents.
After falling in 2022, the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions also helped the Australian cities of Melbourne and Sydney return to third and fourth place in the rankings.
Three UK cities, Edinburgh (58th), Manchester (44th) and London (46th) were among the biggest drop-offs.
