In his opening remarks at the Forum, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien emphasized the role of bilateral trade, especially within the framework of the CPTPP Agreement, as an important pillar to exploit market potential and promote economic cooperation. The Minister affirmed Vietnam's commitment to developing green industry and sustainable energy transition, and welcomed support from Canada, a country with rich experience in the field of clean energy and green technology. The Minister called on businesses of both countries to take advantage of cooperation opportunities to promote investment and sustainable growth in the future.
In the context that the world market continues to face global difficulties and challenges that are fast-moving, complex and difficult to predict, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien also called on Vietnam and Canada to cooperate more closely and effectively, especially in the fields of trade, industry and energy to jointly respond and enhance the resilience of each economy.
Agreeing with the opinions of Minister Nguyen Hong Dien, Canadian Minister of Economic Development, International Trade and Export Promotion Mary Ng affirmed Canada's commitment to promoting economic cooperation with Vietnam, especially welcoming cooperation between the two countries in the fields of industry and renewable energy. She emphasized Vietnam's potential in the Indo-Pacific region and the importance of bilateral relations through the CPTPP Agreement, which helps increase two-way trade and investment, and will continue to support green and sustainable economic initiatives, as well as create conditions for businesses of both countries to develop more strongly.
Senator Clement Gignac, Chairman of the ASEAN-Canada Parliamentarians Friendship Association, as a guest speaker at the Forum, emphasized the important role of building bilateral cooperation in the context of geopolitical instability and the need for Canada to diversify its trade to the Indo-Pacific region. Mr. Gignac highly appreciated Vietnam's economic achievements, especially in participating in free trade agreements, and affirmed that Canada is ready to support Vietnam in the fields of clean energy, high technology and climate change adaptation. Mr. Gignac affirmed that in his role, he will make every effort to promote the Comprehensive Partnership between the two countries to continue to develop strongly in the coming time.
The Forum held a lively discussion with the participation of leaders of agencies and prestigious experts from the Alberta Energy Regulator, the Alberta Ministry of Economy, Trade and Employment, the ASEAN-Canada Business Council, the Canada Asia Pacific Foundation, the Vietnam Inter-Agency Committee on International Economic Integration, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group and representatives of Canadian businesses. The speakers shared their visions on bilateral cooperation, opportunities and challenges in strengthening economic cooperation between Vietnam and Canada in the context of global geopolitical instability, disrupted supply chains, increasing protectionist policies and ways to leverage the CPTPP Agreement and the Indo-Pacific Strategy to promote trade, diversify supply chains and enhance connectivity in the industrial and energy sectors.
Speaking at the Forum, Mr. Ta Hoang Linh, Director of the European - American Market Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade, said that after 5 years of implementing the CPTPP, two-way trade between Vietnam and CPTPP countries has grown by 22%, reaching 102.7 billion USD in 2023, of which Vietnam exported 56.5 billion USD, with a trade surplus of 10 billion USD. With Canada alone, the turnover nearly doubled to 6.2 billion USD in 2023. In the first ten months of 2024, bilateral trade continued to grow at 13.8%, reaching nearly 6 billion USD. The CPTPP Agreement has played an important role in promoting bilateral economic cooperation, increasing added value in exports. Participating in the implementation of the commitments of the CPTPP Agreement also contributes to helping Vietnam promote institutional reform and perfect the legal system towards greater transparency. In the coming time, Vietnam is committed to improving the investment environment and encouraging new cooperation initiatives, opening up great opportunities for businesses of the two countries.
The Forum concluded with an introduction and connection session between Vietnamese and Canadian businesses. This is an important step to realize the discussed cooperation potentials, and at the same time open up specific and promising projects in the fields of industry, energy and bilateral trade in the coming time.
