Ha Tinh farmers wade in floodwaters to save unharvested spring rice
(Baohatinh.vn) - Faced with the fact that unharvested spring rice is surrounded by straw and water hyacinth, leading to the risk of damage, farmers in Ha Tinh have to wade through the vast sea of water to save the rice.

On the afternoon of May 25, Mr. Duong Hoi (born in 1971) brought a rake to the unharvested rice field in Xuan Lau village, Cam Thach commune (Cam Xuyen district) to scoop up the straw floating on the field. In the spring crop of 2025, Mr. Hoi's family planted 9 sao of rice, so far, 5 sao have been harvested, 4 sao are still in the field.
Due to the heavy rain from May 24 to the morning of May 25, Mr. Hoi’s unharvested rice fields were “attacked” by straw from other households’ harvested rice fields. The straw flooded all over Mr. Hoi’s rice fields. If not cleared, when the water recedes, the spring rice will be damaged, or if harvested, not much will be left.
Soaking in the water for hours, the amount of straw that Mr. Hoi could salvage seemed insignificant compared to the entire rice field. "I tried to salvage as much as I could, but leaving it like that would be a pity, a waste of the effort I put into planting and fertilizing the past few months," Mr. Duong Hoi shared.
About 50 meters from Mr. Hoi's family's field, Mr. Ho Van Thanh (born in 1977) was also wading in the water to collect straw and push water hyacinth into his family's rice field.
According to Mr. Thanh, although it is difficult, we must try to handle it while the flood water is high. When the water recedes, straw and water hyacinth will cover all the spring rice, making it impossible to harvest.
According to statistics from the Provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control, heavy rain from May 24 to the morning of May 25 caused 2,250 hectares of unharvested spring rice to be flooded, which could affect productivity and even cause sprouting and damage if it continues to be soaked in water for many days. When the flood water came, it swept away a lot of straw and water hyacinth, covering the rice that could not be harvested.
To avoid the risk of losing spring rice yield, people in many localities in Ha Tinh are trying to salvage straw and water hyacinth from unharvested rice fields.
Even though they have to soak in the vast sea of water for hours, farmers have to accept it, because this is the only way to save the spring rice that cannot be harvested.
People try to scoop up the straw that has overflowed into the fields.
Some rice fields are submerged in water. If left for a long time, the rice will almost certainly be damaged. The authorities of Ky Phong commune (Ky Anh district) mobilized mass organizations and villagers to push water fern out of the fields to save the rice.
