Dr. Nguyen Hoang Hiep, Chairman of the Scientific Council - Institute of Informatics and Applied Economics, shares about air quality in big cities
According to Dr. Nguyen Hoang Hiep, air pollution is becoming one of the serious challenges to public health in Vietnam, especially in large cities such as Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang or Hai Phong. At many times, air quality in Hanoi reaches hazardous levels.
IQAir's 2023 World Air Quality Report also shows that in 2023, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are regularly among the top 20 cities with the most polluted air in the world. Meanwhile, the proportion of people living in urban areas - which are heavily affected by traffic emissions, industry and construction dust - is increasing. Air pollution is an invisible killer. The effects do not occur immediately but accumulate over time, directly affecting children, the elderly and people with underlying medical conditions.
The main cause of air pollution is still greenhouse gas emissions, originating from industrial plants, vehicles, building systems and residential areas using many energy-consuming devices. In addition, prolonged traffic jams in large cities such as Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi also contribute to increasing CO₂ emissions into the environment.
In addition to external emissions, emissions also arise in the working environment: office workers can use computers, printers, air conditioners, phone chargers, etc., all of which create greenhouse gas emissions, and the air conditioning systems in office buildings - which operate continuously - also contribute to heating the outside environment, although they provide comfort inside...
“Air pollution not only affects breathing but also causes many consequences for the cardiovascular system, nervous system, and reduces life expectancy. The elderly, children, and people with underlying diseases are the most severely affected groups,” informed Dr. Nguyen Hoang Hiep.
According to Dr. Nguyen Hoang Hiep, in the past 5 years, emissions in Vietnam have increased, not decreased. If we continue to develop industry without a comprehensive treatment solution, it will be very difficult for us to achieve the emission reduction targets as committed. To improve, we need to encourage people and businesses to use environmentally friendly technology products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Many international corporations are developing energy-saving, carbon-neutral electronic devices that are even capable of filtering the air.
According to the World Health Organization, Vietnam currently records more than 60,000 deaths each year related to air pollution, mostly due to PM2.5 fine dust – microscopic particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and blood, causing cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and even cancer.
