Japan is one of the largest and most stable coffee consuming markets in Asia, with demand remaining strong for many years. It is also an important import market for many coffee-exporting countries, including Vietnam.
According to the Japan Coffee Association, approximately 74.3% of the country's population drinks coffee regularly. Total consumption in 2025 is projected to reach approximately 397,300 tons and is forecast to continue growing steadily, potentially reaching 473,000 tons in 2028 and around 480,000 tons in 2030, representing an average growth rate of about 0.3% per year.
Against this backdrop, the structure of coffee supply to Japan is showing clear competition among major exporting countries. In January 2026, Brazil continued to be the largest supplier with 13.6 thousand tons, valued at US$103.3 million, a significant increase in both volume (19.2%) and value (83.6%) compared to the same period last year, raising its market share from 38.48% to 44.09%.
Vietnam ranked second with 9.1 thousand tons, valued at $42.7 million, a decrease of 2.8% in volume and 14.9% in value compared to January 2025. Consequently, its market share also narrowed from 31.61% to 29.56%. However, with its large and stable consumption volume, Japan remains a promising market for Vietnamese coffee.
Colombia was Japan's third-largest coffee supplier in the first month of 2026, supplying 3,200 tons worth $29 million, representing a 48.8% increase in volume and a 107.2% increase in value compared to January 2025. Colombia's share of Japan's total coffee imports increased from 7.28% in the first month of 2025 to 10.41% in the first month of 2026.
In the coming period, the Japanese market will continue to open up many opportunities for Vietnamese coffee, especially in the processed and value-added product segments. Consumer trends are shifting towards prioritizing convenient coffee, high-quality coffee, and specialty coffee. At the same time, the demand for decaffeinated coffee is also increasing, reflecting consumers' growing concern for health.
