Vietnam receives first batch of international aid for disaster areas

On October 13, in Hanoi, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) handed over emergency aid to people in Bac Ninh province affected by storm No. 11.

This is the first international relief shipment to be delivered to Vietnam after recent natural disasters.

The Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) is assigned to act as the focal point for coordination and connection between donors and local authorities.

The representative receiving the aid was Mr. Nguyen Van Tien, Deputy Director of the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention. On the Japanese side, Mr. Ito Naoki, Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam and Mr. Sugano Yuichi, Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam, attended the handover ceremony.

The aid shipment includes 40 water filtration devices, 5,100 sets of blankets, 1,000 plastic water tanks and 50 multi-purpose plastic sheets. A representative of the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention said that on the morning of October 14, all of these goods will be transferred to Bac Ninh province for timely distribution to people in severely affected areas.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Ito Naoki expressed his deep condolences to the Government and people of Vietnam for the damage caused by floods and storms, and affirmed that the Japanese Government will continue to support Vietnam in natural disaster prevention and climate change adaptation.

In addition to the shipment from JICA, the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention is also continuing to receive relief goods from the Australian Government, Russia, the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Center) and many other international organizations.

The relief packages include necessities, household appliances, home repair materials, water filtration equipment, personal hygiene items and cash assistance, with priority given to heavily damaged localities such as Lang Son, Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang and Bac Ninh.
